IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Reading is a literacy skill that enable a human to comprehend a language by decoding its meaning. The printed reading material lost its significance in recent times due to the availability of books and newspapers online. I firmly believe that anyone will hardly buy a book or printed copies due to the easy accessibility to digital books and reading materials which are more convenient, affordable, and portable. The ensuing paragraphs will discuss different perspectives before presenting my opinion with relevant examples.

Earlier people used to read newspapers in their leisure, whereas books were mostly the means of entertainment as there were very few ways of entertaining oneself. When radio, television, and theatre came into the picture, the people began to distract from books. Moreover, it is crucial for people to manage books, keep them tidy, and to organize them according to their genre. Furthermore, television in every house provided easy access to the latest news and the stories which people tend to read in books are now available in the form of a movie or animation.

As our society became technologically advanced, computers, mobiles, laptops, and internet had given access to the endless sources of knowledge; we can have infinite numbers of books and newspapers from across the globe can be easily found in a corner of our room. Now people do not have to bother about the piles of newspapers which have been already read and they had to keep their stocks, had to wait for several days before a junk dealer comes and collect them all. Internet made reading quite easier as the latest news bulltein worldwide can be watched free of cost using Youtube and other search engines like Google.

To recapitulate, reading newspapers and books was a fun activity and it also used to enhance our knowledge and awareness. But with the introduction of new softwares and overall connectivity, it became more handy and useful. Individuals can now read multiple books at a time without worrying of getting them lost.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position, stating that people will hardly buy printed books or newspapers due to the accessibility and convenience of digital materials. However, some ideas are under-developed or less fully explored than others. For instance, the paragraph discussing the historical shift from newspapers to television and movies touches on several points—such as managing physical books and media adaptation—without fully elaborating on how these historical trends directly prove that nobody will pay for content in the future. To move to a higher band, the writer would need to extend and support all main arguments with deeper explanations and more direct links to the prompt's focus on future payment habits.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement and a clear organizational structure, beginning with an introduction that outlines the writer's stance and concluding with a summary of the main points. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct ideas, such as the historical context in the second paragraph and the technological advancements in the third. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Transitional phrases like 'Earlier people used to read' and 'As our society became technologically advanced' are used, but referencing and logical progression occasionally falter, such as the abrupt transition regarding junk dealers in the third paragraph. To achieve a higher level, the writer should ensure smoother transitions between sentences and more precise use of cohesive devices to maintain a seamless flow of ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their main arguments about digital reading materials. The student attempts to use less common vocabulary and phrases, such as 'accessibility', 'convenient', 'affordable', and 'infinitely numbers of books', though these attempts occasionally feature inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'infinitely numbers' instead of 'infinite numbers' and 'bulltein' with a spelling error. Some word-form and spelling issues are present, like 'software' used with a plural 'softwares'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from reaching the precision required for higher bands. To improve, the writer should focus on expanding their range of less common lexical items and ensuring accurate spelling and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures such as relative clauses and conditional-style reasoning. There are, however, some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include article and pluralization issues like 'Reading is a literacy skill that enable' instead of 'enables', and preposition or structural slips such as 'worrying of getting them lost' instead of 'worrying about getting them lost'. Despite these occasional errors in grammar and punctuation, they rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to demonstrate greater control over complex sentence patterns and eliminate recurring slips in subject-verb agreement and prepositional usage.
