IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Reading is considered one of the very good hobby for anyone however, a group of individuals inclined to think that they will be able to read everything on social media for free and none of the human could purchase the typed news article or directory. I agree with the statement to a large extent due to the development in technology. My position is eleborated further with reasons and examples.

The first and the foremost argument to justify my stand is the affordability, nowadays the internet is easily available everywhere, many individuals like to watch news online on social media, one can see it at any time and from any place on earth for instance, if a person is travelling and he wants to know the news of share market then he can simply open his smartphone and see news quickly, as it is impossible sometime to get newspaper anywhere.

Additionaly, it might be quite challenging to carry several books with us wherever we go because books need be handeled with care and need safe place to be kept, as if it is kept irresponsibly anywhere then there is possibility that someone would stole it or it might get wet due the drop of any liquid things on it for example, the books and physical newspapers need to be kept in a book shelf or in a cupboard so that it do not get damage, as of once it got damaged than it might be tricky to recover the important news or book we want.

On the contrary, it can also be state that online can be quite af

To conclude, it can be said that physical books carry emotions but it should be kept in a proper manner on the other side, online reading is quite easy and has its own benifits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially and presents a position that is somewhat simplistic. While the writer states an agreement with the prompt, the ideas are limited and under-developed, relying on repetitive arguments rather than deep exploration. For instance, the discussion on affordability and convenience in the second paragraph remains general and lacks thorough support. Furthermore, the final body paragraph is severely incomplete, cutting off mid-sentence, which leaves the argument fragmented and underdeveloped. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to present a fully developed position with well-supported arguments that thoroughly explore both sides of the issue before arriving at a clear conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some organisation present, such as basic introductory and concluding remarks, but the essay lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is noticeably problematic, particularly with the truncated fourth paragraph which disrupts the flow of the text. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as 'On the contrary, it can also be state that online can be quite af...' which breaks off abruptly, and 'on the other side' used inappropriately for contrast. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. To improve, the writer must ensure that all paragraphs are fully formed, logical transitions are used naturally, and ideas progress smoothly from one point to the next without abrupt interruptions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items and topic-related words such as 'affordability', 'smartphone', and 'share market', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling. Examples include 'hobby' instead of 'hobbies', 'eleborated', 'Additionaly', 'handeled', 'stole' instead of 'stolen', 'liquid things', and 'benifits'. These errors occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted lexical range. To achieve a higher score, the student should expand their vocabulary range, ensure correct word forms and spellings, and demonstrate greater precision in word choice without relying on repetitive terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and occasional attempts at complex structures that are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text that can cause difficulty for the reader. For example, run-on sentences and comma splices are common, as seen in 'Reading is considered one of the very good hobby for anyone however, a group of individuals...' and '...the internet is easily available everywhere, many individuals like to watch news online...'. Additionally, there are issues with articles and plurals, such as 'none of the human could purchase the typed news article'. To improve, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms with greater accuracy, pay closer attention to punctuation, and reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors.
