IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Reading is a good habit as it makes you discipline. It is a believe of many people that every person should adopt reading as it widens knowledge and build up your personality, and reading physically by looking at book put more impact. I also believe that printed items would not get vanished in future and would not get that much effected by online materials.

Some people agrees that online website will have impact on printed newspaper and books but many people prefer reading by looking at the physical paper. This makes you more focus on reading rather than focusing on other things like messges or any other website if you are reading on laptop or ipad. It is easy for you to remember things, and also much beneficial for your health in many ways. The rays from the screen of devices may effect your eyes and weaken them. Loosing focus put major impact on achieving the different task.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially and fails to meet the required word count, as it contains only 157 words compared to the minimum of 250 words. The writer presents a clear position agreeing that printed items will persist, mentioning health concerns with screens and better focus with physical paper. However, the ideas remain limited and under-developed due to the brief length. For instance, the point regarding screen rays affecting eyes is mentioned in a single sentence without further elaboration or support. To reach a higher level, the writer must fully extend and develop all main ideas with relevant examples and explanations while ensuring the word count requirement is fully satisfied.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation within the text, with an introduction and a body paragraph expressing distinct ideas, but the overall progression is unclear and lacks smooth transitions between sentences. The writer uses basic cohesive devices such as 'Some people agrees' and 'It is easy for you', but referencing is at times repetitive and mechanical. Paragraphing is attempted, but the text lacks a proper concluding paragraph to tie the arguments together logically. To improve cohesion, the writer should employ a wider range of cohesive devices more accurately and structure the response into a clear introduction, well-supported body paragraphs, and a distinct conclusion that guides the reader seamlessly through the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic message, featuring frequent lexical and word form errors. Examples include 'makes you discipline' instead of 'disciplined', 'It is a believe' instead of 'belief', and 'Loosing focus' instead of 'Losing focus'. Furthermore, terms like 'get vanished' and 'put major impact' demonstrate awkward collocations and limited control over word choice. These noticeable errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to incorporate a wider and more precise range of vocabulary, pay closer attention to correct word forms and spellings, and use more natural collocations suited for academic writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are multiple grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues such as 'Some people agrees' and errors in prepositional or clause patterns like 'reading by looking at book put more impact'. Punctuation and article usage are also inconsistent, with missing articles before singular countable nouns like 'book' or 'laptop'. These frequent errors can cause difficulty and strain for the reader. To improve in this area, the writer must work on mastering basic sentence structures, ensuring accurate verb tenses, plurals, and subject-verb agreement, and producing a greater variety of error-free complex sentences.
