Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt minimally, touching upon the general topic of online reading versus printed materials, but the position is not consistently clear throughout the essay. The student attempts to discuss merits and demerits, but the ideas are limited and under-developed. For instance, the discussion on the impact on employment is repetitive and lacks strong supporting evidence or clear extension. The essay tends to over-generalize without grounding the arguments effectively, presenting fragmented thoughts on health and reading habits rather than focusing strictly on whether nobody will buy printed items because online content is free. To progress to a higher level, the writer needs to present a well-developed position with fully elaborated main ideas and relevant supporting details for both sides of the argument.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organization with discernible introduction and conclusion paragraphs, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs is weak, with ideas jumping abruptly between mental health, employment, and personal reading habits. Cohesive devices are used in a limited or repetitive manner, such as 'To commence with', 'Futhermore', and 'In conclusion', but referencing is not always clear, making it difficult to follow the logical development of the argument. To improve, the writer needs to ensure that each paragraph has a clear central topic and that sentences are linked smoothly using a wider range of appropriate cohesive ties to establish a logical flow throughout the essay.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and basic, with frequent instances of inappropriate word choice and word formation errors, such as writing 'availabe in online' instead of 'available online', and 'overweight by pro' instead of 'outweighed by pros'. There are also several spelling and typographical errors, such as 'futher' and 'moblie'. While the writer attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'demerits' and 'generation', inaccuracies in collocation and style occasionally impede communication. To reach the next band, the student must expand their lexical repertoire and use words with greater precision and awareness of collocation, while significantly reducing basic spelling and word-form errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few faulty attempts at complex forms. There are frequent errors in basic grammar, including missing or incorrect articles ('a lott of things', 'the world'), faulty subject-verb agreement, incorrect prepositions ('seeing into phone'), and punctuation issues. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty and strain for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures and demonstrate better control over basic grammar, punctuation, and tense consistency, ensuring that the majority of simple and complex sentences remain largely error-free.
