IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

This is widely debated topic today. With the modernization of the world, there are many advances in every field of life. The recent developments in the digital media have provided reading material online. Many people think that in the future books and newspapers would be outdated as all reading content would be available on internet. I do not agree with the statement. I believe that despite the widespread availability of digital media, books and printed materials would continue to play their role in some aspects.

On the one hand, the internet has revolutionized the modern education systems. All kinds of informations and knowledge are available on our one click. Everyone can access to the informtion from anywhere in the world at any time. The online debates, broadcasts and live news can be seen thoughout the day. Moreover, livestreaming of important events are available round the clock free of cost. In such a situation, the printed newspapers have lost their importance and their sales have declined markedly. Likewise, the tablets and I pads have become increasingly popular among students and have replaced heavy books from students' hands.

On the other hand, many institutions still use printed text books in their curriculums. Furthermore, researchers continue to consult libraries for their studies and references. In addition, many people still use printed books for memorizing and preparing for examinations as they provide them with tactile experience and avoidance of eye strain due to screen.

In conclusion, I think, despite the free availability of reading content online, printed material will not disappear from the markets and would be used for limited purposes in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear overall position that disagrees with the statement. The writer extends relevant ideas throughout the body paragraphs, noting the benefits of digital media on the one hand and the enduring value of printed texts on the other. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the discussion on how tablets replace heavy books is introduced but not fully explored regarding its long-term implications. The response successfully demonstrates the characteristics of the lower band by addressing all parts, while showing glimpses of the higher band through a consistent, maintained stance and relevant supporting arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with a discernible introduction, well-differentiated body paragraphs using 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand', and a clear conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'Moreover' are used effectively to link ideas, although referencing and linking can occasionally feel slightly mechanical. Progression is maintained well from general statements to specific examples, such as mentioning the tactile experience of physical books and the avoidance of eye strain, which satisfies the requirements for logical flow and transparent structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'modernization', 'revolutionized', 'tactile experience', and 'markedly'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as writing 'all kinds of informations' (information is uncountable) and 'available on our one click' instead of 'with a single click'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments easily. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate greater precision and flexibility in less common lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'I believe that despite the widespread availability...' and 'In such a situation, the printed newspapers have lost...'. There are some grammatical errors present, such as missing articles ('access to the informtion' and 'from markets'), pluralisation issues ('livestreaming... are available'), and minor prepositional inaccuracies ('access to the informtion from anywhere'). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and punctuation is generally sound, meaning they rarely impede communication. The control over grammar is adequate to secure a solid performance at this level.
