IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is argued that people will have no interest in buying printed newspapers in near future as they will be able to learn about anything online without even paying for it. Although online reading provide a wide range of material to study, printed newspapers is a better option for a person who want read with more concentration and being comfortable.
To begin with, online reading has become more common among young generation in modern era. Digital media has changed the way of conveying the news and made it more interested. People get to read about more topics online than on paper newspaper as more information is available now on internet. For example, many news agencies now don't print news papers because people don't have enough time to read newspaper. That's why now agencies write articles on their website so people can read any date news or whatever they want. Hence it is clear from this that in future people will prefer studying online.
On the other hand, reading printed newspaper is a better option for those who want to concentrate more. Furthermore, reading online requires a digital device that could damage the eye sight. It could be another reason why people would not leave reading printed news paper in future. For instance, my grandfather has week eyesight so it's get really difficult for them to read online. That's why he prefer reading printed newspaper. As a result, printed news paper will be more useful for the people who have weak eyesight or want to read with more concentration.
In conclusion, the reading through online source or printed newspaper both have their own benefits and drawbacks. Online study should be the preference for students or teenagers as it provide great extent of information while printed newspaper should be available for old people or people who have weak eyesight.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, acknowledging both sides of the argument regarding online and printed media. However, the development of ideas is uneven. For instance, the first body paragraph discusses how digital media changes the conveyance of news and mentions agencies writing articles on websites, but this idea is somewhat repetitive and lacks deeper extension. The conclusion directly summarises the main points and delivers a balanced view on the topic. To reach a higher band, the writer would need to ensure that every main idea is fully extended with robust explanations and more specific supporting examples rather than relying on generalisations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas across paragraphs, reflecting the lower-end boundary of the band while demonstrating some features of the next. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, starting with an introduction, moving to online reading, then to printed newspapers, and concluding with a summary. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used to structure the text, though referencing is sometimes faulty, such as the ambiguous pronoun use in 'so it's get really difficult for them to read online'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but making cohesive ties smoother and more natural would elevate the writing further.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting less common items such as 'conveying the news', 'digital media', and 'concentration'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation throughout the text. Examples include 'young generation' instead of 'the younger generation', 'paper newspaper' instead of 'printed newspapers', 'any date news' instead of 'news from any date', and 'week eyesight' instead of 'weak eyesight'. These lexical inaccuracies do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the score to this band. To improve, the writer should focus on expanding word forms, mastering collocations, and refining spelling to ensure greater precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses with 'although', 'because', and relative structures. However, there are several grammatical errors scattered across the text, such as missing articles ('in near future'), subject-verb agreement issues ('online reading provide', 'printed newspapers is'), tense inconsistencies ('a person who want read'), and preposition errors ('reading through online source'). Punctuation and sentence structures are generally functional, and while the errors occur regularly, they rarely impede communication. To move to a higher band, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free sentences and exercise tighter control over basic grammatical agreements and article usage.
