IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

With the introduction of smartphones, We notice a significant shift towards switching from traditional newspaper to screens, as people nowadays feels it more convenient to read and source like internet gives an option to read it free. It is predicted that in future, everyone will stop buying a printed materials and totally transfer to smart devices. I strongly agree with this prediction because it also helps environment and comfortable to read from anywhere.

Nowadays, with this growing prevalence of smart devices like smartphones, laptops and tablets, people are moving from physical aspects to digital aspects for even small tasks. Numerous individuals already shifted from traditional reading materials like newspaper and books to electronic newspapers and digital available books because it helps them to read from any place and as well as it is easier to store the articles. For instance, New York Times gives several features what it can't provide in printed copy, features like saving your favorite articles as well as listen the article. Moreover, it is comparatively faster than the hard copy as you need to wait for a whole day to get yesterday's news while digital media post immediate after any incident.

Furthermore, replacing paper with screens have its own benefits. Paper are normally made from trees, and to reach all requirements it needs a sacrifice of millions of trees. Due to that it affects the environment as cutting trees can leads to global warming. For example, according to one survey done by students of MIT, USA, everyday around 85 thousand trees are cut off to achieve the requirements of paper in all over the world, due to that every year there is a increase in deforestation and rise up global warming issues like heat wave and unusual climate in some regions. So international and national bodies are taking actions against these act and trying to resolve this issue, so there is a high possibility that in future it will be totally online.

In my opinion, there is a high chance that in future people will transfer from printed copies to Digital copies as it is suitable for them and also solve major environmental issues.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your essay addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting a clear position that you strongly agree with the statement regarding the shift to online reading and the phasing out of printed materials. You extend your ideas by discussing both practical convenience, such as features offered by platforms like the New York Times, and environmental benefits related to deforestation and global warming. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed, particularly the economic aspect implied by the prompt regarding whether everything will be entirely free online. To reach a higher level, you would need to explore all facets of the prompt more fully and ensure your main arguments are extended with deeper analysis rather than general statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding opinion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'For instance' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, your use of cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is not always entirely clear, such as in sentences like 'Paper are normally made from trees, and to reach all requirements it needs a sacrifice.' Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas, but to achieve a higher band, you need to ensure that cohesive devices are employed with greater flexibility and that transitions between sentences and paragraphs flow more naturally without relying on formulaic connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrases such as 'growing prevalence', 'deforestation', and 'global warming issues'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and word-form errors throughout your response that prevent you from achieving a higher band. For instance, writing 'digital available books' instead of 'digitally available books', 'Paper are normally made' (concord/lexical slip), and 'rise up global warming issues' instead of 'intensify global warming issues'. While these minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, you will need to demonstrate greater precision in word choice and collocation, as well as fewer errors in word forms, to reach the next tier.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

Your essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. You attempt complex sentences with dependent clauses, such as 'It is predicted that in future, everyone will stop buying a printed materials and totally transfer to smart devices.' Nevertheless, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('a printed materials'), pluralization issues ('a printed materials'), and minor prepositional or agreement mistakes. These errors indicate a lack of reliable control over more complex structures. To improve, you should focus on sentence-level accuracy, ensuring proper subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and precise control over tense consistency across your writing.
