IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the coming years, physical form of newspapers or books will be replaced by e-newspapers or e-books because of the technological evolution over time. I strongly agree that people will prioritise reading on online platforms and the urge to purchase printed newspapers or books will diminish as it prevents environmental damage which is caused by cutting off trees.

Technological advancements will provide accessibility of world news or other reading items to the every reader. This is because, in this contemporary age, everybody, who reads, prefers convenience and the ways by which they can have access to a reading material without spending a single penny, so individuals have likely started shifting to the technological gadgets and the figures will keep increasing in the future. As these gadgets will be easy to carry, would save cost and will be accessible to everyone at any time of the day. This would eventually result in the complete elimination of purchasing physical newspapers or books. For example, people around many countries have to travel for business meetings or job-related work. In order to keep themselves updated about the world or busy while travelling, they tend to read e-newspapers or e-books which are readily available on the internet.

Deforestation increases the temperature of our planet every year. Human beings have always overlooked the disasters that can take place due to cutting off the trees for the purpose of making papers by the help of wood. In spite of climate change over the years, significant number of trees are damaged every year. By the help of woods, people manufacture different things like printing newspapers, magazines, books. It may provide short term benefits, but human beings might have to face long-term consequences. For instance, global climate change in the recent years has resulted in rise in a temperature of the earth, sudden rainfalls or floods which has eventually destroyed lives of many people.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that nobody will every buy printed newspapers or books, once they switch to electronic reading materials. This will not only save cost and provide convenience, but it will also help us save our planet from natural disasters.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting a clear position throughout in strong agreement with the statement. The writer introduces two main arguments: technological convenience and environmental protection through the reduction of deforestation. While the environmental argument is well-extended with examples regarding climate change and natural disasters, the economic argument regarding free reading materials contains some generalisations and slight under-development. Overall, the ideas are relevant and present a transparent line of argument, successfully meeting the criteria for a score that sits between a fully developed task response and one with some under-developed sections.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as technological accessibility and environmental impact. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical, with transitional phrases like 'This is because' and 'For instance' acting as formulaic connectors rather than flowing naturally. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the pronoun use in 'manufacture different things like printing newspapers', which slightly disrupts the smooth progression of ideas from sentence to sentence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'technological evolution', 'contemporary age', and 'environmental damage'. There are, however, some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'cutting off trees' instead of 'cutting down trees' and 'rise in a temperature' instead of 'rise in temperature'. Despite these occasional slips and minor errors in word form, meaning is successfully conveyed and communication is never impeded, placing the lexical range firmly at this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures reasonably well. There are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('to the every reader', 'manufacture different things like printing'), incorrect prepositions ('by the help of wood'), and occasional comma splices. Fortunately, these grammatical errors rarely impede communication, and the majority of sentences retain clarity, reflecting a typical profile of mixed simple and complex structures with controlled error frequency.
