IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is widely debated that individuals will read everything that they want online rather than spending money on printed material such as books and newspapers. From my perspective, I strongly agree with this view because internet allows people to access thier favourite study material from anywhere and also helps them to save their money instead of purchasing hard copies.

The primary reason of my opinion is that Internet allows individuals to access thier favourite study material from anywhere. People do not need to carry the hard copies with them. They can access their relevent study material. For instance, a student travelling and also they have to give an exam at the same time. By using internet they can access their books or notes and prepare for thier exam. Therefore, online material provides flexibility to users and they can read their relevent study material from anywhere.

Another significant reason for my opinion is that it helps people to save thier money. People are oftenly spending significant amount on purchasing expensive books and other study notes. Internet encourages them to save thier money and access their notes online. For example, a student has limited financial sources and pursuing their education. It may difficult for them to fullfill their expense, but using internet they do need to spent amount on notes. As a results, they can spend thier saving amount in other possitive activities such as living or fee expensess.

In conclusion, I firmely believe that instead of spending money on hard copies, internet allows people to access the notes and books. This can help individuals to save thier money and provide more flexibility to access the material from anywhere.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by stating a clear position of agreement regarding online reading versus purchasing printed materials. However, some ideas are under-developed or repetitive. For instance, the argument regarding saving money is supported with general points about students having limited financial sources, but the examples lack specific detail or breadth. The writer expresses a clear position throughout, but the development of arguments remains somewhat limited and predictable, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band where ideas would be more fully extended and supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, as well as distinct body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct main points. However, the use of cohesive devices is at times mechanical or repetitive, as seen with phrases like 'The primary reason of my opinion is that' and 'Another significant reason for my opinion is that'. Referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression within paragraphs occasionally falters due to abrupt transitions, showing aspects of a solid structure while leaning towards characteristics of the lower band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing enough range to discuss the topic of online reading and printed books. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'flexibility' and 'financial sources', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form, including recurring spelling mistakes like 'thier', 'relevent', 'oftenly', 'firmely', and 'possitive'. These lexical slips and spelling inaccuracies indicate a limited control of vocabulary and require the reader to occasionally exert extra effort, though communication is not severely impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting complex structures such as relative clauses and conditional ideas, though these attempts are frequently accompanied by errors. There are noticeable inaccuracies in grammatical structures, articles, and prepositions inside patterns, such as 'internet allows people to access thier favourite study material' missing necessary articles, and awkward phrasing like 'do not need to spent amount on notes'. These errors in grammar and punctuation appear with some frequency, reflecting a control where simple sentences are generally safer while complex structures introduce persistent errors that occasionally cause difficulty.
