IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In recent years it has been an increasing debate about whether people will stop buying printed books and newspapers in future due to advanced technology that would make it easy to access any reading contect online.

I largely agree with this point of view that people will not buy printed books and newspapers and they would be able to find anything online to read easily. As it is the easiest way of finding anything to read and reduces the need to visit the multiple books shop or waiting for the books to get printed for availability in stores.

I could be argued that real assence of reading lies in reading from books and printed newspaper. And it might effect the newspaper distribution job or may be result in reduction of book stores.

But, I would argue that effects of online availability of books and newspapers is far much positive then its negative impact. Reader would not have to wait for publication and prinitng of books or delievery of newspaper to their home. Online access would be an easy mean of getting things fastly with negligible wait. People would no longer require arrival of newspaper to read the latest news. Similarly, book readers would no longer require to wait for publication and printing of books before availability on books stores.

Likewise, Prinitng of significant amount of papers impact ecosystem. Making everything online will no longer require to print newspapers and books. Similarly, if a book get huge demand from readers then it would require a large amount of printing. Making it online will make it easier for reader to skip store visit and long wait before printing and also a good impact on ecosystem.

In conclusion, I completely agree that people will not buy printed newspapers and books in future after getting it online without paying. This is mainly beacuse reading online is an easy way and good green initiative.

Overall5.5

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, as seen in statements like 'I largely agree with this point of view that people will not buy printed books and newspapers.' However, some ideas are under-developed or repetitive. For instance, the discussion on environmental impacts and waiting times tends to circle back to the same points regarding printing and distribution without sufficiently extending the arguments. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to explore ideas with greater depth and avoid unnecessary repetition, providing more fully developed supporting arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct points, such as the counter-argument and the main supporting arguments. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Phrases used to connect ideas, like 'I could be argued' and 'far much positive then its negative impact,' show awkward mechanical transitions rather than smooth links. Referencing is also occasionally unclear. To improve cohesion further, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure referencing between sentences remains transparent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'ecosystem,' 'publication,' and 'negligible wait.' However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling that reflect a limited and less precise control. Examples include 'contect' instead of 'content,' 'books shop' instead of 'bookshops,' 'assence' instead of 'essence,' 'fastly' instead of 'quickly,' and 'Prinitng' with capitalization and spelling issues. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score. Expanding vocabulary precision and mastering spelling and word formation will elevate this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses. There are, however, some recurring errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include passive voice errors like 'I could be argued' instead of 'It could be argued,' comparative errors like 'far much positive then' instead of 'far more positive than,' and article or pluralization issues such as 'reduction of book stores' and 'reader would not have to wait.' Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning generally remains clear. To achieve a higher band, the writer must produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and maintain better control over basic grammatical structures.
