IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Technology plays their role everywhere in the world and it is convienient for people in various aspects. Some proponents argued that no one will spend money on printed newspapers in upcoming years, as whatever they need will be available on platforms for free of cost. I am not agree with this statement as the reasons are discussed in the essay below.
To begin with, there are several reasons why we should not stop purchasing printed newspapers. Reading newspapers is one of the way that help individuals to have a better reading skills and improve their vocabulary which will benefit them, Moreover, It is also a kind of activity which help people the less use of screens. For instance, If a person use mobile phone everytime so it will be harmful for them, therefore, if they give some time to read newspaper so they can enjoy offline games available in newspaper. People cannot replace newspaper just because of money and think that online is free because watching news online also needs wifi or balance which cost them alot as compared to buying paper.
Furthurmore, watching news online is not that bad but it will lead to more screen time and it is convienient for those who's eyesight is weak and they are not able look paper for too long so they listen to news online or watch videos. Another reason for my opinion is that, If there is some trouble in the network for days so people would not able to read news online, as therefore, newspaper will help people to give details about everything.
To conclude the topic, Online and offline newspapers both need money,it is wrong to say that we can watch news online for free, Therefore I disagree with the statement and it will also lessen the reading skills of a person.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task only partially and presents a position that is not always entirely clear or well-supported. While you present a clear stance at the end of the introduction stating that you disagree with the statement, the ideas provided in the body paragraphs remain somewhat limited and under-developed. For example, your points about reading newspapers helping vocabulary skills and reducing screen time are relevant, but they lack sufficient extension, explanation, and concrete real-world examples. Additionally, some arguments touch on contradictory points, such as mentioning weak eyesight and online news in the third paragraph, which makes the overall development somewhat unfocused. To move to a higher level, you should ensure that every main idea is fully elaborated with robust explanations and clear supporting examples rather than moving quickly between disparate points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organization present in the essay, with a clear attempt to use paragraphing and introductory signposts such as 'To begin with' and 'To conclude the topic'. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression throughout the text, and some ideas jump abruptly between concepts without smooth transitions. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or mechanical, such as the frequent comma splices used to connect independent clauses, for instance, in 'Online and offline newspapers both need money,it is wrong to say...'. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, making it hard to follow the exact logical thread of your arguments. To improve, you should focus on creating stronger logical links between sentences and paragraphs, and ensure that cohesive devices are used accurately and naturally to guide the reader through your line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Your lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. You attempt some less common vocabulary items, but noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling occur frequently throughout the text. Examples of spelling errors include 'convienient' and 'Furthurmore', while lexical inaccuracies appear in phrases such as 'platforms for free of cost', 'wifi or balance which cost them alot', and 'not able look paper'. These errors sometimes cause difficulty for the reader and reveal a restricted control over collocations and word patterns. To reach the next level, you need to expand your vocabulary range, practice accurate word forms, and pay closer attention to spelling and standard collocations, ensuring your chosen terms precisely fit the intended context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a limited range of structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic complex forms. Your attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, containing noticeable grammatical errors in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions inside grammatical patterns. For example, phrases such as 'Technology plays their role', 'Some proponents argued' (tense consistency), 'one of the way that help', and 'if a person use mobile phone everytime so' demonstrate persistent inaccuracies that can cause difficulty for the reader. Punctuation control is also weak, particularly regarding run-on sentences and comma splices. To achieve a higher band, you should work on increasing your control over complex sentence structures, ensuring correct verb tenses, proper subject-verb agreement, and accurate punctuation throughout your writing.
