IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Introduction of web technology has changed the habits of human being in every aspect. If they want to access latest news or want to read any specific books or novels they can go to web page of their mobile phone, tabs and laptops and can access it, but due to this the value of printed newspaper had been declined and there is also a notion that in the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. I agree with notion on some extent because technology has changed the reading habits of human.
On the other hand, there is extensive argument in favour of books and printed newspaper as it holds cultural values for us even now our grandparents or old age people had maintained the habit of reading from printed papers. If the usage of these gets completely vanished then it will also affect people financialy beacause thousand of people are involved in process of printing. People will start loosing their jobs and strikes will happen against these mobile phone technology which will indirectly affects the goverment revenue
However, I firmly believe that going towards paperless society is overall benifical for both enviornment and humans. On internet we can get access of any news or any types book we want to read for free whereas if we ant printed newspaper or books it cost us a significant amount of money. Also one thing that we all have heard from our birth that paper by the process of cutting tress. Trees provides us oxygen to live and society goes towards being paperless it will help in reduction of global warming as more tree will present to produce more oxygen.
In conclusion, I agree with notion of going paperless as it will be benificial for both humans and society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on whether printed books and newspapers will disappear in favour of free online reading. The writer covers both sides of the argument, discussing cultural values and the economic impact on the printing industry in the second paragraph, alongside the environmental benefits and cost-effectiveness of a paperless society in the third paragraph. However, some ideas remain under-developed or briefly stated, such as the claim regarding government revenue and job losses, which lack sufficient extension and support. Furthermore, 23 words copied directly from the task prompt were excluded from the official word count, though the remaining original text comfortably satisfies the minimum length requirement. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to fully develop all main points with specific explanations and examples rather than jumping between arguments quickly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into an introduction, body paragraphs addressing opposing views, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the arguments for printed materials in the second paragraph and the benefits of going paperless in the third. Nevertheless, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. The transition between the introduction and body paragraphs feels abrupt, and referencing is not always clear, particularly in phrases like 'the usage of these gets completely vanished' and 'one thing that we all have heard from our birth'. Additionally, cohesive devices are somewhat repetitive, often relying on basic connectors like 'On the other hand', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. To achieve a higher standard, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother logical transitions between sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'paperless society', 'global warming', and 'financialy'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, including 'human being' instead of 'human beings', 'web page' instead of 'websites', 'loosing' instead of 'losing', 'benifical' instead of 'beneficial', 'enviornment' instead of 'environment', and 'tress' instead of 'trees'. Word choice and collocation are occasionally awkward, such as 'strikes will happen against these mobile phone technology'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the vocabulary score. To improve lexical resource, the writer should focus on expanding vocabulary precision, mastering word formation, and carefully proofreading to eliminate basic spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use varied structures like conditional clauses and relative clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and articles that reflect a limited level of control. Examples include article omissions ('Introduction of web technology', 'on internet', 'cost us significant amount'), pluralisation errors ('thousand of people', 'more tree'), prepositional issues ('agree with notion on some extent'), and awkward verb tenses ('the value of printed newspaper had been declined'). While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they occur across many sentences and prevent the writing from achieving a higher grammatical score. To progress, the student must strengthen command over basic sentence mechanics, subject-verb agreement, article usage, and ensure complex structures are formed accurately.
