Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position of agreement with the statement. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed throughout the essay. While the writer attempts to present reasons such as technological advancement and ease of access, these points are stated rather than extended or supported with convincing elaboration. For instance, the counter-argument regarding health problems like eye strain is introduced briefly, but it lacks depth and specific examples. Furthermore, the conclusion shifts focus slightly to social media rather than strictly maintaining the scope of printed newspapers and books. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to fully develop each main idea with relevant explanations, clear examples, and a more thorough exploration of both sides of the argument.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates some organisation with the use of transition words like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'On the other hand', but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is noticeably problematic; the entire body of the essay is clustered into dense blocks rather than being separated into distinct, logical paragraphs for introduction, main body points, and conclusion. Additionally, cohesive devices are often repetitive or mechanical, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the abrupt transition in 'Apart from that, carrying books or newspaper people like to read...'. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure proper paragraph formatting, use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive ties, and structure the progression of ideas so that the logical flow from one point to the next is smooth and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to communicate the basic argument. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'technological advancement' and 'demolished', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling throughout the text. Examples include 'cadget' instead of gadget, 'preffer' instead of prefer, 'primted' instead of printed, and 'totaly depend' instead of totally depend. Moreover, phrasing such as 'disattract their mind' is unnatural and impacts precision. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to spelling and correct word forms, and use collocations more naturally to ensure that word-choice errors do not occur frequently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple or faulty complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors that can cause difficulty for the reader, including punctuation omissions, run-on sentences, missing articles, and subject-verb agreement issues. Examples of these errors include 'It is matter of debate, that individual will reduce', 'technology becoming more advance', and 'spending too much time in front of screen also cause neck pain'. Punctuation is particularly weak, with missing full stops, incorrect capitalization, and comma splices. To improve, the writer must increase their control over basic grammar rules, correctly employ verb forms, fix article usage, and incorporate a wider mix of error-free complex sentences with accurate punctuation.
