IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that no one would buy newspapers or books in the future as people can possibly read everything online without paying. I partially agree with the statement, because the physical copies help a person to easily access information without an internet connection, whereas online learning provides few benefits but has more issues

First and foremost, the learning of a person starts with physical books and printed materials. This helps the child learn how to read, write and understand the language. For example, elderly people still love to read newspapers as well as students learn from the books in the library. This demonstrates that printed media remains an important part of daily life across different generations.

Furthermore, the online readers will also get affected by the devices. This suggests that printed copies are healthier to read than digital media. As it is proven that long time usage of mobile devices, monitors and systems has resulted in eyesight issues as well as mental fatigue caused by prolonged screen exposure.

On the other hand, the key benefit of online reading includes vast access of information. A user can read about a topic from any where in the world with the internet access, such as a student in India can read a research paper/journals published by a German univeristy or an online users can read real-time news within minutes of broadcast.

In conclusion, the online reading is good for a limited time period, but for regular usage, the physical books and papers are more beneficial in everyday life even in future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you partially agree that online access will reduce demand for printed media, while arguing that physical copies will remain useful. You support this with relevant points about children’s learning, older readers, screen-related fatigue and online access to international research and news. This addresses the task, but the two sides are not developed equally. The benefits of print are explained in several paragraphs, whereas the statement’s key claim—that people will be able to read everything online without paying—is not examined directly. For example, you could discuss whether free online access is realistic or whether convenience and cost will lead people to stop buying books. Develop each main reason with a clearer explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, supporting paragraphs, a contrasting point and a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “First and foremost,” “Furthermore” and “On the other hand” help signal the direction of the argument. However, the progression is not always fully smooth: the paragraph about children learning to read shifts to elderly readers and students without explaining how these examples support the same point. The contrast paragraph also presents online access as a benefit, but the conclusion does not clearly reconcile this with your stated partial agreement. Some connections, such as “This suggests,” are broad and do not specify exactly what the preceding point demonstrates. Make each paragraph’s central claim explicit and use references that clearly connect evidence to that claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “physical copies,” “printed media,” “prolonged screen exposure,” “vast access” and “real-time news.” These choices allow you to discuss both print and digital reading, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural word combinations and forms, such as “access of information,” “online users” where you mean readers, and “long time usage.” Spelling errors such as “univeristy” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and precise phrasing: for instance, “access to information” and “extended use of digital devices.” Vary repeated references to “online reading” and “physical books” with suitable alternatives, while ensuring that substitutions remain precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “because people can possibly read everything online” and a contrast structure with “whereas.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In the opening, “I partially agree … because the physical copies help” is followed by an unclear contrast with “whereas online learning provides few benefits but has more issues.” The sentence beginning “As it is proven that…” is a fragment, and “a student in India can read … or an online users can read” has inconsistent number and structure. There are also article and preposition problems, such as “with the internet access.” Check that each sentence has a complete main clause, and review agreement, articles and parallel structures when combining examples.
