IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given statement talk about in upcoming days people will stop purchasing or reading physcical copies of newspapers and books because they can read everything online free. In other paragraph we will talk about the benefits and causes, in addition to that I will recommend which is better and stand with my opinion.

I partialy agree with the statement. Thre are many people who prefer to consume information through internet due to flexibality and easy to find it with the help of keywords also provide the same information from many authors point of view. In addition to that they can read any articles and books when they are travelling easily also they don't have to buy many books for any research or for the one time use, that will save money as well as space. But online have disadvantages also people will easily distract or can read any wrong information. And new generation will do each and everything online like makes notes or to read any newspapers or books.

On the otherhand, there are many people who prefer to use physical notes. For instance, old generation want newspaper at the time of breakfast or early morning, that is there need and they enjoy that. In India most of the family buy newspaper and books to increse their knowledge and that is part of their routine. Our grandparents stays with purchasing materials as they are doing these thing from many years and use some part of their money on it. I also prefer it because i think it is our tradition.

To conclude, from my opinion i stand with agree that in future rate of purchasing newspapers and books will decline because online will provide flexibality and not consume our time and also save some part pf our money.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address the question and state a position: you “partially agree” and predict that purchases will decline, while recognising that some people will continue to prefer print. The discussion of online convenience, cost and portability is relevant, as are the examples of older people’s newspaper routines and family habits in India. However, the position shifts slightly: the introduction promises to discuss “benefits and causes,” while the conclusion says you “agree” rather than clarifying the extent of your partial agreement. Some points, such as the risk of online misinformation and the claim that younger people do everything online, are mentioned but not explained or supported. Develop these ideas and directly address whether free online access will replace print entirely, rather than only reduce its use.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for online and printed materials, and a conclusion. The contrast between the two preferences helps the reader follow the main discussion, and linking phrases such as “In addition to that” and “On the other hand” signal relationships between ideas. However, some connections feel mechanical or unclear: “In other paragraph we will talk…” sounds like a plan rather than part of the argument, and “But online have disadvantages also” does not smoothly connect the points. The conclusion repeats the prediction without resolving the difference between “partially agree” and “agree.” Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to your position to create more consistent progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “keywords,” “authors,” “research,” “routine,” and “tradition.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “one time use” and “consume information.” However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural word combinations are noticeable, including “physcical,” “flexibality,” “increse,” and “rate of purchasing.” Some wording is vague or repetitive, particularly repeated references to “people” and “online,” and “physical notes” does not clearly mean printed newspapers and books. These choices sometimes make the reader pause, although the overall meaning remains understandable. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for discussing digital and printed media.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, for example, explaining that online reading can save “money as well as space” and contrasting this with older people’s habits. The main argument is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Subject–verb agreement is inaccurate in “The given statement talk” and “online will provide”; articles and plural forms are also inconsistent, as in “prefer to use physical notes” and “any articles and books.” Several sentences join ideas without clear punctuation, especially the sentence beginning “But online have disadvantages also.” The conclusion’s phrasing, “from my opinion i stand with agree,” is difficult to follow. Practise accurate agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, and proofread capitalisation and punctuation while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
