IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is commonly believed that due to the advancement of technology, printed newspapers or books will not be bought by anybody in the future as people will be able to read everything online without investing money. In this essay, I will discuss why I partially agree with this statement because printed newspapers or books will still play a crucial role despite the availability of online materials.
On the one hand, the availability of electronic books has made reading convenient and comfortable for people. They can read online at anytime anywhere, which proves useful for them. Moreover, as they can read books online in their mobile phones, they do not need to carry printed books. Online materials are cheaper as compared to the printed books because there is no need to spend money on buying books. Therefore, these are the reasons, which indicate that people will not use printed newspapers and books in the future.
On the other hand, printed books and newspapers have their own benefits, which cannot be neglected. Firstly, reading printed books seems more comfortable to some individuals than online because online reading puts strain on their eyes and also they get distracted by notifications that appear on screen while reading. Furthermore, printed books cannot be replaced by online books as printed materials play an important rule in schools. It helps to improve the concentration of people, which is not possible online as excessive online reading weakens the eyesight.
In conclusion, although online availability of content has reduced the need of buying printed books, but in future, it will still be useful for comfortable reading and for learners.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you partially agree, and the essay considers both the convenience of online reading and reasons printed materials may remain useful. Relevant support includes portability and cost on one side, and eye strain, notifications and use in schools on the other. This addresses the main question, but the extent of your agreement is not fully consistent: the introduction says printed materials will play a crucial role, while the conclusion says they will still be useful without clearly weighing how likely their continued purchase is. Some points also need fuller explanation, particularly the claim that printed materials are important in schools and how this relates to buying newspapers and books. Develop these links and make your final judgement more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. The progression from advantages of online reading to benefits of print is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “Moreover” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This logical organisation is a strength. However, some connections are mechanical, and the conclusion’s “although … but” construction makes the relationship between the ideas less smooth. There is also a reference issue in “It helps to improve the concentration”: “It” does not clearly identify whether you mean printed material or reading. Use more precise referencing and connect each supporting example directly to the paragraph’s main claim to make cohesion more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “availability,” “convenient,” “distracted,” “notifications” and “excessive.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and some topic-specific language helps distinguish online from printed reading. However, several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, such as “read books online” and “online materials,” while “investing money” is not a natural choice for the idea of paying for content. There is also a word-choice error in “play an important rule,” where the intended expression is “play an important role.” Aim for more precise collocations and vary repeated terms such as “printed books” and “online” without sacrificing clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “because online reading puts strain on their eyes” and “although online availability of content has reduced the need…”. Most sentences remain understandable, and errors rarely obstruct the message. Some grammatical issues persist, however. In “at anytime anywhere,” the adverbial sequence needs clearer punctuation and phrasing; “at any time, anywhere” is more controlled. The conclusion’s “although … but” uses two contrasting structures together, and “printed materials play an important rule … It helps” shifts from a plural subject to a singular pronoun. Review clause construction, agreement and punctuation, while continuing to use complex sentences.
