IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

People argue that nobody will buy traditional newspapers or books in the future as they will be able to read everything online without any cost. I partially agree with this statement because e-books and newspapers are convenient and preferable nowadays but on the other hand, there are some people will still prefer traditional books and newspapers over printed ones.

Nowadays newspapers and books are avaliable on internet easily and people nowadays prefer reading it online instead of buying one. On of the main advantages of printed books and newspapers are that they are convenient for everybody. They don't need to buy every books and newspapers. Also, it is helpful for somebody who cannot affrod buying one. Moreover, we don't need to carry it everywhere as it will be available on online platforms and is convenient for travelling. Furthermore, we don't have to search for any books as there are many platforms available which have all the books at one place.

In contrast, I also believe that there will be some people who will still prefer reading books and newspapers in traditional way. It is because they love the feeling of reading printed books and it gives them some kind of attachment which they prefer. Also, nowadays people go through many health related issues due to extensive use of screen such as headache, eye sight issues etc.

In conclusion, many people argue that nobody will buy printed newspapers and books because they will be able to read everything online. In my opnion this statement is true but to some extend because there are many advantages of e-books and e-newspapers such as convinience but at the same time there will be some people who would prefer printed ones because of it's health issues.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you partially agree that online access will reduce purchases, while printed publications will remain appealing to some readers. You address both sides and give relevant reasons, including convenience, affordability, attachment to print, and possible screen-related health effects. However, these points are not equally developed. The benefits of online reading receive several explanations, while the preference for print is supported more briefly; the claim that online reading is free is also accepted without qualification. The conclusion repeats your position but does not sharpen it. To develop the response further, explain why free online access may not replace all purchases and add a specific example or fuller explanation for each main reason.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on online reading, a contrasting paragraph on print, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “In contrast” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the main direction. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, with repeated linking words such as “Also” and “Moreover,” and the first body paragraph groups several points without a clear hierarchy. The phrase “On of the main advantages” also makes the relationship between the point and its explanation harder to follow. Improve progression by giving each paragraph a clear central claim, arranging supporting details in a deliberate order, and using pronouns or varied transitions to avoid repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “traditional,” “convenient,” “attachment,” and “health related issues.” However, the range is limited and several choices or spelling errors reduce precision. For example, “available on internet” and “available on online platforms” are awkward, while “prefer reading it online” has an unclear reference. Errors such as “avaliable,” “affrod,” “opnion,” and “convinience” are noticeable. Repetition of “books and newspapers,” “prefer,” and “convenient” also limits flexibility. Build a more precise range of expressions for digital access and print readership, and check spelling and natural word combinations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, using clauses with “because,” “as,” and “which,” and the overall meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in sentence construction and agreement. For example, “there are some people will still prefer” needs a relative clause (“there are some people who will still prefer”), and “the main advantages … are” does not agree with the singular idea introduced by “one.” In “we don't need to buy every books,” the determiner and plural noun do not match. The final sentence also has an unclear structure around “because of it's health issues.” Practise checking clause structure, agreement, and singular/plural forms, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
