IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The means of communication have evolved significantly in recent years, with digital media receiving immense popularity. With the advent of the internet, it is predicted that people will shift from print media to online reading platforms that allow them to learn information for free. I agree with the forecast made, and this essay includes the reasons for it.

Advancements in the field of mass communication have led to the development of digital media, that is, the availability of various materials, such as articles, blogs, books, and newspapers on the internet, persuading individuals to stop buying printed products. The primary reason explaining this expected shift is the accessibility aspect of online services, making it easier for working individuals, who are often short on time, to not only get news about their surroundings, but also relax without the hassle of going to a store looking for books. In addition to that, since the internet is available everywhere, it allows one to read any piece of interest anywhere. Secondly, although print media is not costly, it is not free either, and as the saying goes, 'money saved is money earned'; one will prefer to access free e-books and new articles rather than spending money on paperbacks.

Additionally, through awareness campaigns and initiatives, people have realised that a large number of trees are cut down to make newspapers and are, hence, avoiding the use of print media. When citizens make such conscious choices, it benefits the nation as a whole by promoting nature conservation. On the contrary, some arguments suggest that people will not banish the use of print media completely and would still prefer reading physical copies.

Over time, the demand for print media will definitely fall back.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you agree that online reading will replace printed products, and you give relevant reasons, including convenience, free access and environmental concerns. The discussion of accessibility is supported with examples such as working people getting news or reading wherever the internet is available. However, the task asks how far you agree, and the counterpoint that some people will continue to prefer physical copies is only briefly mentioned and not answered. The environmental point is also asserted rather than developed with explanation of how it will affect future purchasing. The conclusion, “the demand for print media will definitely fall back,” is less decisive than your stated agreement and does not clarify whether print will disappear entirely. Develop these points and qualify your prediction more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, with ideas generally moving from convenience and cost to environmental concerns. Linking expressions such as “In addition to that,” “Secondly” and “On the contrary” help signal relationships between points. However, some connections are mechanical or not fully logical. “On the contrary” introduces a qualification rather than a direct contradiction, and the final sentence does not clearly resolve the contrast raised just before it. The first body paragraph also contains several ideas in one long sequence, making the progression less controlled. Use clearer topic sentences, connect each example explicitly to your prediction, and make the conclusion follow directly from the position and counterargument.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a good range of topic-related vocabulary, including “digital media,” “accessibility,” “print media,” “conscious choices” and “nature conservation.” Some less common expressions, such as “advent of the internet” and “promoting nature conservation,” show awareness of formal style, and meaning remains clear throughout. There are occasional imprecise or unnatural collocations: “learn information” would be more naturally expressed as “access information,” while “fall back” does not clearly mean that demand will decline. “Banishing the use of print media” is also stronger and less natural than the intended idea of reducing or abandoning it. Aim for precise collocations and avoid elevated phrasing when a simpler, more exact expression communicates your point better.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You demonstrate a useful mix of sentence forms, including complex clauses: “The primary reason … is the accessibility aspect …, making it easier for working individuals…” and “When citizens make such conscious choices, it benefits the nation as a whole…” Many sentences are controlled and easy to understand. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “digital media, that is, the availability…,” the comma before “that” is not appropriate for a defining explanation; use “which is” or restructure the sentence. The long sentence beginning “The primary reason…” is overloaded, and its infinitive sequence (“to not only get …, but also relax”) is awkwardly balanced. In “a large number of trees are cut down … and are, hence, avoiding,” the subject and verb relationship is unclear. Simplifying these structures and checking parallel forms would improve accuracy.
