IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The information and knowledge is essential for human growth wheather it is from newspaper or books. people buy books for study purpose and newspaper for current updates however,

it can be easily replaced by digital devices which affect their sales in future. I partially agree with this because online provides the flexibility and convenience it has also some disadvantages.

Reading newspapers and books online provide the greater flexibility because the person dont have to carry stuff or material for all the time it can be use his device such as mobile phones and other items at any place. for instance, the college students often use to read and learn from online platform such as many student preparing competetive exams from online coaching which enable them to prepare according to their time routine and it also offer global news updates which further easily replaced the newspaper such as social media which give the instant information about world current updates.

However, the online learning has some drawbacks such as many people or individuals dont want to learn and read from totally by watching on screen devices which effect their eyesight ultimately compromised their health. Many old people still dont have digital devices or they dont used the smart phones and they used to prefer read information from books and newpaper. for example, the classroom learning is more good for some students because they can clear their doubt instantly in classroom which is not availble in online platforms.

To conclude, the major advantages of online learning or reading newspaper is free of cost which maybe absent in offline reading. By contrast, the printed newspaper and book are also good remains important in day today life by their availbility for individuals who dont uses much digital devices.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you partially agree that online reading may replace print, while recognising that printed materials remain useful. You address both sides with relevant points, including convenience for students and the preference some older people have for print. The examples of online exam preparation and classroom learning help illustrate your argument. However, the response does not fully examine the task’s specific claim that people will read everything online without paying. The point that online reading is “free of cost” appears only in the conclusion and is not developed, while the drawbacks focus mainly on screen use and access to devices. Develop these points and explain more directly why free online access may or may not eliminate demand for printed books and newspapers.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting online reading, a contrasting paragraph, and a conclusion. The shift signalled by “However” makes the opposing point easy to follow, and examples are generally placed alongside the ideas they support. Some connections are less clear or mechanical, though. The first body paragraph moves from portability to exam preparation and then social-media news without clearly explaining how each example supports the prediction about printed publications. In the conclusion, “By contrast” does not clearly connect the claim about free online reading with the continued value of print. Use clearer topic sentences and link each example explicitly to the paragraph’s main claim; also make references such as “it” and “they” more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “flexibility,” “convenience,” “digital devices,” “global news updates,” and “drawbacks.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “competitive exams” and “instant information.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which sometimes makes the meaning less natural. For example, “online learning” is used when you mean reading newspapers or books, and “compromised their health” is not a natural way to describe the effect of screen use. Spelling errors such as “wheather,” “competetive,” and “availbility” also reduce accuracy. Build a wider set of precise expressions for print and digital media, and check spelling and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast between advantages and disadvantages and a reason introduced by “because.” The overall meaning is usually understandable, but errors in sentence structure and basic grammar recur. For example, “The information and knowledge is essential” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “the person dont have to carry stuff” and “they dont used the smart phones” show errors in verb forms and agreement. Some sentences also run together, as in the opening paragraph, where punctuation and clause boundaries are unclear. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, and verb forms, then use full stops to separate complete ideas. Aim to make complex sentences controlled rather than joining several points in one sentence.
