IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
People will stop buying printed newspapers or books in the near future as they will have all the reading resources online for free. I totally agree with the given statement.
Nowadays, almost all the people have smartphones and access to resources online. Soon, even in undeveloped areas people will get smartphones. This has made getting information about any topic very easier for the people. Everybody can get news info online with an instant without wasting their time to make the effort to bring and read the whole newspaper. People do not need to buy books as they are already available online. Recently, i myself downloaded a book's pdf online on my smartphone as it was a lot easier than going to the library and buy it. I also get all the news info online by just scrolling and do not even need to search for it.
Having these online resources also saves us from the cost of buying the physical resources. These days newspapers do not come at anybody's home as people now watch the tv or get the news online on their phones as they do not need to pay for it. Likewise, many academic students prefer to have online books in their colleges or universities rather than buying books physically as it would be costly. I also downloaded all my books pdf online instead of wasting money over it.
In conclusion, i think it is a very positive trend as it has many benefits and soon all the people will be using online resources rather than buying newspapers and books.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the introduction—“I totally agree”—and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address both newspapers and books, giving relevant reasons: online access is convenient, and digital resources avoid the cost of printed materials. The personal examples about downloading a book and academic books also support your view. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that people in undeveloped areas will soon have smartphones is not supported, and the discussion does not consider whether free online access is always available or whether printed publications may still appeal to some readers. Develop the main reasons with clearer explanation and more specific support to make the argument more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting convenience and cost, and a conclusion. The ideas generally progress in a sensible order, and linking expressions such as “Likewise” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, particularly through repeated references to “online” resources and repeated personal examples of downloading books. Some connections between claims could also be clearer: the move from smartphone access to the prediction about undeveloped areas is abrupt, and the second paragraph repeats the idea that digital materials save money without extending it much. Use more varied referencing and develop each paragraph around a distinct, clearly connected line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including terms such as “resources,” “academic students,” and “physical resources.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, such as “news info,” “online,” and “books pdf.” Some word combinations are unnatural, including “get news info online with an instant” and “wasting money over it,” which can make the reader pause. Aim for more precise topic vocabulary and natural collocations—for example, “access news instantly,” “digital editions,” and “the cost of printed books.” Also check spelling and capitalization, including “myself” and “PDF.” These improvements would make your meaning more fluent and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple sentences and some longer structures, including clauses with “as,” “rather than,” and “as it would be costly.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “almost all the people have” would be more natural as “almost everyone has,” while “very easier” uses an incorrect comparative form. In “rather than going to the library and buy it,” the verb forms should be parallel (“going … and buying”). There are also errors in capitalization and sentence punctuation, such as lowercase “i” and the comma splice in “I also get all the news info online by just scrolling and do not even need to search for it.” Practise accurate comparisons, parallel structures, and punctuation while varying sentence patterns.
