IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is believed that no one will purchase print media and reading material in future because digital version of these will be available for free. I completely agree with this statement because publishers will have been shifted to advertisement based earning model and paper making will be reduced due to enviromental reasons leaving digital reading the only option for consumers.

There is a growing trend in print media publishers and newspaper writers to shift towards publishing their content online because they are being aware of the fact that earning through advertisements is superior source than from consumer and they are making content available to be read by people for free. This will encourage people to shift toward digital books and e-newspapers as it would not cost them any money. For example, a lot of newspaper companies have now digital versions of their newspapers which availble for free to people and earn by displaying add on same page.

Also, paper is made from wood. And lot of trees are being cut to run paper industry which is leading to adverse effects on the environment. Environmentalists are worried about this suitation and are raising this concern. In near future policies will be made to reduce the usage of paper where it can be. As reading material and print media have a better alternative like publishing online. These will be first effected by reduction of paper usage and people will be encouraged to consume digital versions of these. There are lot of companies now shifting toward paperless system by utilizing softwares and internet as a replacement.

In the conclusion, as companies are shifting towards digital advertisements, it is making possible for publisher to earn more by publishing books online and earning through ads rather than by selling the content. Due to environmental effects which is being cause hy deforestation for paper making, governments are making policies to reduce paper usage. Due to these reasons, I highly believer that nobody will spend money on buying reading materials as it will be available digitally for free.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you completely agree that free online material will replace paid print media. Both reasons are relevant—the shift to advertising-funded publishing and environmental pressure to reduce paper use—and you support them with examples such as newspaper websites and companies adopting paperless systems. This covers the task well. However, some claims are asserted more than explained: for instance, the move from environmental policies to printed books and newspapers becoming the only affected products needs clearer reasoning. The argument also treats free online access as inevitable without considering whether all publishers or readers will follow this pattern. Develop these points with more precise explanation and qualification to make the response more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion restates the position. The progression from advertising revenue to environmental concerns is easy to follow, and examples are placed in the relevant paragraphs. Some linking is effective, such as “Also” introducing the second reason. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or unclear. The opening “And” in the second body paragraph creates an abrupt transition, while “These” in “These will be first effected” has an unclear reference. The conclusion repeats much of the introduction rather than drawing the two arguments together. Use more precise referencing and make the relationship between each claim and its supporting explanation explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “advertisements,” “digital books,” “environmentalists,” “deforestation,” and “paperless system,” so the main ideas are understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “adverse effects on the environment.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or awkward, which limits precision: “superior source than from consumer,” “availble for free,” and “earn by displaying add” do not express the intended meanings naturally. Spelling errors such as “enviromental,” “su itation,” and “believer” also detract from control. Build a bank of accurate collocations for publishing and revenue, and proofread spelling and word forms so your vocabulary communicates ideas more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “which,” and “where,” and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. Some sentence patterns are effective, such as the opening sentence of the second body paragraph. However, errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms recur. For example, “they are being aware” uses an unsuitable verb form, and “a better alternative like publishing online” does not form a complete, well-integrated sentence in context. The sentence beginning “As reading material and print media…” is also a fragment, while “which is being cause” has an incorrect passive form. Review clause completeness, verb forms, articles, and agreement, then check punctuation around sentence fragments and conjunctions.
