IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that the printed newspaper and books are not necessasry in the future because people will able to acces all the information they want. I agree with that digital media will become incresingly popular. But i do not believe that printed materilal will disappear completey.

To begin with, there are several reason of why people are likely to prefer reading online in the future. Firstly, digital media are more convenient and accesible. People can read newspaper, books and articles on their smartphones at any time and place. Many websites and online platforms are provide free information, which can save time. Secondly, online newspaer are fast because it can published breaking news immediately, while traditional newspaper need to print first. For example. a person who is travelling from one city to another can easily known the outside situation by having the free command of digitalization.

However, printed newspaper and books are unlikely to disappear because many people are prefer pyscial learning holding a books reading it without the disatraction of electronic devices. Printed books can also be comfortable for people who spend whole their reading books. For instance, a professor of oxford college stands in the classroom for whole day to teach pupils, as a result they perfer traditonal printed method. In addition, newpaper may also become popular among old people who are less familiar with technology.

In conclusion, athough online sources are likely to replace traditional newspaper and books. I disagree with it will completely replace it because of old individuals meaing that both digital and printed formats are likely to coexist in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you agree that online reading will grow, but disagree that print will disappear completely. You address both sides with relevant points, including convenience and rapid news online, and the appeal of physical books and older readers’ familiarity with print. This covers the task well, while the examples show why the response is more than a simple assertion. However, some support is less convincing or insufficiently explained. The example about a professor teaching all day does not clearly demonstrate why printed books will remain popular, and the travel example is difficult to interpret. Develop these points by explaining the reader’s specific needs and linking each example directly to your argument. A more precise explanation of the role of free online access would also strengthen your discussion of the prompt’s claim.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting online reading, a contrasting paragraph about print, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “However” helps readers follow the main stages of your argument. The conclusion also returns to your central position. Some connections within paragraphs are less clear, though. The professor example appears abruptly and does not follow logically from the point about physical reading, while “For example” is followed by an unclear travel scenario. There is also a slight mismatch in the conclusion, which first says online sources are likely to replace print and then rejects complete replacement. Make these links more explicit, and use referencing and transitions less mechanically so the progression feels smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “digital media,” “breaking news,” “traditional newspaper,” and “electronic devices.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “less familiar with technology.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate word choices are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: examples include “necessasry,” “accesible,” “newspaer,” and “pyscial.” Some phrases are also unnatural or unclear, such as “free command of digitalization” and “comfortable for people who spend whole their reading books.” Aim to learn common collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise wording would help distinguish between access to free online content, the convenience of digital reading, and the physical experience of reading print.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast introduced by “However” and a reason clause beginning “because.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “people will able to” needs an auxiliary, “online platforms are provide” combines incompatible verb forms, and “it can published” is missing the passive auxiliary. Other examples include “many people are prefer” and “a person … can easily known.” Punctuation also needs attention: “For example.” should introduce the following sentence with a comma, and the conclusion’s opening clause is not properly connected to the main sentence. Practise accurate clause patterns and proofread for complete verbs and sentence boundaries.
