IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In contemporary society, digitalized paper has become a topic of considerable debate. Many people believe that physical form of writing is not necessary, as any form of written text can be accessed without any charges through internet. I firmly agree with the view that printed paper are not necessary due to several compelling reasons. This essay will not only elaborate on my viewpoint but also provide relevant examples to support it.
To commence with, one of the most significant reasons is the conservation of trees. This can be attributed with the fact that environment will be protected. In other words, papers are required for writing and the major source of paper is tree. For instance, if digital reading is promoted then demand of paper for books and newspapers would decrease, resulting in trees being not used. Ultimately, it leads to environmental conservation, as trees are crucial for regulating several life cycles and protecting the earth.
Moreover, another crucial factor to consider is that it is long-lasting. Furthermore, it is easy to access and efficient to use. A particular good example of this is web browser, here anything can be browsed and information related to news, different genre of books and other aspects can be retrived smoothly. In addition, the digital data cannot be erased completely from the data records, so it is eternal. Thus, it is evident that digital reading is more convenient and efficient.
In conclusion, although some may argue that physical records are vital for the history and culture, I strongly believe that it is not because of the reasons discussed above. Therefore, nobody will buy printed newspapers or books in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the introduction: you firmly agree that printed materials are becoming unnecessary, and the conclusion restates this view. You give relevant reasons, particularly tree conservation and the convenience of online access, and the example of using a web browser helps illustrate the second point. However, the response does not fully examine the claim that people will be able to read everything online without paying. The environmental point is explained, but the link between reduced paper use and trees being “not used” is unclear; the convenience point also needs more specific support. The brief concession about physical records is not developed. Addressing these aspects more directly and extending each main idea with precise explanation would make the argument more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The main ideas progress from environmental benefits to convenience, and signposts such as “Moreover” and “In conclusion” make the organisation easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectation of a coherent arrangement and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. At times, however, cohesion feels mechanical because several sentences begin with formulaic transitions, including “To commence with,” “Furthermore,” and “Thus.” Some references are also unclear: “it is long-lasting” does not specify whether “it” means digital reading or digital information, and “here” in the browser example has an awkward connection to the preceding clause. Use clearer referencing and more varied links between explanation and evidence.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “conservation,” “digital reading,” “environmental conservation,” and “efficient.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “a topic of considerable debate” and “compelling reasons.” Some less common choices are not used accurately or naturally, however. “Digitalized paper” does not clearly express the contrast between printed and digital material, while “physical form of writing” is imprecise. Phrases such as “trees being not used” and “a particular good example” also sound unnatural, and “retrived” is misspelled. Aim for precise collocations and check spelling; this will help your vocabulary communicate the argument more naturally without relying on broad or awkward expressions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if digital reading is promoted then demand of paper… would decrease” and a subordinate clause beginning “as trees are crucial…”. Most sentences remain understandable, and the errors do not generally prevent the reader from following your position. Some grammatical inaccuracies persist, particularly with agreement, articles and sentence construction. For example, “printed paper are not necessary” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “the major source of paper is tree” needs a plural or an article. The sentence beginning “A particular good example of this is web browser, here…” joins ideas awkwardly and needs clearer punctuation or restructuring. Review agreement and article use, and make sure longer sentences are joined correctly.
