IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the recent decade, technology is increasing in every sector. Technical gadgets are replacing the old traditional things. People are becoming more advanced and a time will come where people will avoid buying newspapers or books because there will availability of every content on online site where they will not have to pay a single penny.

Starting with the techinical websites available in market for news reading or for book reading are increasing day by day. In addition, people are prefering those websites because they feel it is easy and convenient way to use. For instance, if you are travelling and want to read any kind of news or book then people can easily read from their phones and do not have to carry heavy books or paper. Moreover, this indicates that people will go for such convenient way instead of complicating it.

Moving forward, one question sparks up in our mind that is there any other reason for disappearance of newspaper or books in future? Yes, there are other reasons why people refer online website for reading books or newsppapers. Another point to be consider is that online website are the fastest mean of news. To elaborate, if any incidence happens then it will be displayed on online website first and then it will be printed on newspapers. To add more, such websites are free so why will people pay for newspaper.

Personally I think that after looking to all perspective, it is clear that in future newspapers or books will be completely replaced by online website.

To sum up all the information mentioned above, looking on the people's need and convenience, online news or books is gonna take over the traditional method and this traditional methods will be diminised day by day

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you agree that online reading will replace printed newspapers and books, and you give relevant reasons, including convenience while travelling and the speed of online news. The examples help address the question, and the conclusion restates your view. However, the discussion of free access is asserted rather than examined, and the claim that printed books and newspapers will be “completely replaced” is stronger than the support provided. The response also focuses more on newspapers and news websites than on books, so the two parts of the topic are not developed equally. To strengthen the argument, explain whether free online access is likely for all content and consider a counterpoint, such as readers who still value printed books.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress from convenience to the speed and cost of online news, and signposts such as “In addition,” “Moreover” and “To sum up” make the organisation easy to follow. At times, however, these linking phrases feel mechanical, and some connections are unclear. For example, “one question sparks up in our mind” introduces a question, but the following answer repeats the point about online reading rather than clearly developing a new line of reasoning. The final paragraph also repeats the conclusion without adding a distinct summary. Use fewer formulaic transitions and make each paragraph’s main point and supporting explanation more clearly connected.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “convenient,” “disappearance,” “fastest” and “replaced.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable word-choice, collocation and spelling problems make the writing less natural. Examples include “technical websites,” “sparks up in our mind,” “fastest mean of news,” and “diminised.” Repeated use of “online website,” “people” and “newspapers or books” also limits flexibility. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the argument, but they reduce precision and sometimes make the meaning awkward. Build a more varied set of expressions for digital access, printed media and news delivery, and check spelling and common word combinations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, using clauses with “because,” “if” and “that,” as well as a question to introduce a point. The overall meaning is usually clear, but some errors in sentence structure, agreement, verb forms and articles remain. For example, “there will availability” is missing a grammatical structure, “people are prefering” uses an incorrect verb form, and “online website are” has a subject–verb agreement error. The sentence beginning “Starting with the technical websites…” is also incomplete as written. Work on forming complete sentences and checking agreement and verb patterns; for instance, use “people prefer these websites” and “online websites are.” Greater accuracy across these structures would make your argument smoother.
