IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that traditional methods such as buying printed newspapers or books as the days pass everything can be accessed through online without payment. In this essay, I will discuss why I partially agree with this view because convenient to the readers and accessablity play an important role in printed books than availability of online resourses.

On the one hand, the availability of electronic books had made more convenient to the readers. These books or articles can be accessed at any time, which is very helpful to gain knowladge at any place. Moreover,

as they can read book in online on their mobile phones, they need not to carry printed books. Online articles are cheaper as compared to printed books because of this we need not to spend money on printed books. Therefore, this are the reasons why people not use printed newspapers or books in the future.

On the other hand, printed books and newspapers have their own benefits, which cannot be negleted. Firstly, reading printed books is more comfortable for some individuals than online books because online reading strains the eyes when we watch phones and we may be distracted by notifications on screen during reading. Furthermore, we cannot replace printed books in place of online material because printed books play an important role in schools. It improves concentration of people, which is not possible by online reading.

In conclusion, although online resourses reduced the purchasing of printed books, but in future it will still be useful for comfortable reading and for learners.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is that you partially agree, and you address both sides of the question: online reading is convenient and can reduce spending, while printed material may be more comfortable and useful in schools. These are relevant reasons, and the conclusion returns to your view. However, the position is not fully clear in the introduction: the phrase “accessibility play an important role in printed books than availability of online resources” seems to contradict the point you develop about online access. Some ideas also need fuller explanation. For example, explain how printed books support concentration in schools, and distinguish free online material from paid e-books or subscriptions. Clarifying these points and supporting them with specific examples would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs presenting the two sides, and a conclusion. “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help signal the change in argument, while “Firstly” and “Furthermore” organise supporting points. However, some links are mechanical, and the introduction’s final clause makes the direction of your argument difficult to follow. The sentence beginning “Therefore” repeats the preceding point rather than clearly advancing the discussion. There are also unclear references, such as “It improves concentration,” where the reader has to infer whether “It” means printed books or reading them. Use more precise referencing and make each paragraph’s points build on one another.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “availability,” “convenient,” “distracted,” and “concentration,” and the reader can generally understand your ideas. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors make the writing less natural. Examples include “accessed through online,” “read book in online,” and “online resources reduced the purchasing.” There are also misspellings such as “accessablity,” “knowladge,” and “negleted.” These errors do not prevent understanding, but they are noticeable and sometimes make the intended meaning less precise. Build a bank of accurate topic phrases, such as “access digital publications” and “purchase printed copies,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which is very helpful” and a contrast structure beginning “although.” The main ideas remain understandable, but errors in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and verb forms are noticeable. For example, “the availability of electronic books had made” uses an unsuitable tense, while “this are the reasons” has incorrect agreement. In “they need not to carry,” the verb pattern is faulty, and “although … but” combines two contrasting structures unnecessarily. The opening sentence is also difficult to parse because its clauses are not clearly connected. Practise accurate sentence patterns and check each sentence for a clear subject, verb, and logical connection.
