IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that in upcoming generation most of the people didn't show intrest to purchase printed newspapers or books, they directly read through online apps because it is free of cost. I patially agree with this view because reading through online is more convenient and cheaper than carrying books or newspaper,Whereas in some places newspapers and books plays a important role through this assay i will discuss why i partially agree.

On the one hand, reading newspapers or books through online is more convenient and free of cost. This is because we can see so many online websites are available for studying different types of books which provide suitable language and size of letters, moreover we can read at any time and any where in the world we no require to carry just open over phone and easily get the required content or books. For example, daily i am a newspaper reader in my home but when i am travelling to other locations during trips I face so many problems to buy newspaper early morning, now a days i just open google and search for newspaper and I select language the paper read in free of cost. Therefore, online reading makes person more convenient and free of cost.

On the other hand, printed books and newspapers plays a important role. For instance, consider schools phones are restricted to use at that situation every student require printed books to study.

Moreover, reading printed books or newspapers is good for our health because more usage of phones causes strain of eyes and headache.

In conclusion, I partially agree the statement because is helps person feel more convienent and can read easily with low range of cost but printed books also plays important role in some asspects where we feel diffcult to use online services.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you partially agree because online reading is convenient and inexpensive, while printed materials remain useful in some settings. Both sides are addressed, with relevant support such as accessing newspapers while travelling and schools restricting phone use. These examples help answer the question, but the discussion is uneven: the online-reading point is explained in more detail, whereas the school and health points are stated briefly. The response also focuses on convenience and access, with limited consideration of the claim that people will be able to read everything online without paying. To strengthen the argument, explain how free online access might affect future purchasing and develop the counterargument with a specific explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the main progression easy to follow. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and some links between ideas are unclear. For example, the first body paragraph moves from website features to reading while travelling, then repeats that online reading is convenient and free. The second side contains two brief points without much explanation connecting them to the argument. The introduction’s final phrase, “through this assay,” also does not clearly guide the reader. Group related points, avoid repeating the same benefit, and use clearer references and transitions to show how each example supports your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “printed newspapers,” “online websites,” “language,” “strain of eyes,” and “restricted.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural, sometimes making the meaning less precise. Examples include “in upcoming generation,” “read through online,” “free of cost,” and “low range of cost.” Spelling errors such as “intrest,” “patially,” and “convienent” also reduce accuracy. Aim to use more natural expressions and check spelling carefully; for instance, “read online” and “at no cost” are clearer than the repeated “through online” and “free of cost.” More precise vocabulary would also help distinguish affordability from convenience.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a reason clause beginning “This is because” and a contrast introduced by “Whereas.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “newspapers and books plays” should use a plural verb, while “a important role” needs the correct article. The opening sentence joins several ideas with commas, creating a run-on structure, and the final sentence is missing a clear subject in “because is helps person.” Some sentences also lack appropriate punctuation or contain awkward clause connections. Practise building shorter, complete sentences first, then combine ideas with accurate conjunctions and check subject–verb agreement and articles.
