IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Newspapers and books will be replaced with e-books and news channels online in the future and people will be able to access them without paying any money.

I agree with this statement, as time has passed, a spike in e-books, audiobooks, audio summaries of the books has been observed on the internet. People can checkout the news on their mobile on social media without paying anything. Instead of carrying physical copy of books everywhere and looking out for it, people find it convenient to read books on their device. Instead of waiting for newspaper in the morning to read the latest news, people can do so much faster via social media. E-books will increase convenience for people certainly. And audiobooks are also a better option as people can listen to the book while doing some other sort of activity and hence they can multitask and it is an added benefit for people who don't like to read.

However, physical copies of the books and newspaper won't be completely replaced. Many people especially elderly ones will still prefer books and newspaper over online stuff. Core book readers will also prefer physical copies of books as the experience of reading books in physical form is very different than reading books online. And social media isn't a totally reliable source of truth for latest news that's why newspapers will not be completely replaced in the future. Moreover, the experience of reading from books and newspaper is very authentic, so with time the trend of books and newspaper might even rise again just like other 90s trends which have risen in the last 5 years.

In conclusion, number of books and newspaper purchased will go down due to the internet but it won't be completely replaced.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you agree that online access will reduce purchases of print, but you qualify this by arguing that printed books and newspapers will not disappear entirely. You address both sides with relevant reasons, including convenience, audiobooks, older readers’ preferences, and concerns about social media reliability. This meets the task well, though some points are more fully explained than others. For example, the convenience of digital reading is supported with several details, while the claim that print trends may rise again is linked only briefly to 1990s trends. To strengthen the response further, explain how these examples support your prediction and distinguish more clearly between free online content and paid digital books or news.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting digital media, a contrasting paragraph defending print, and a conclusion that restates your qualified position. Connectors such as “However,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. The progression is generally logical, but some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated “Instead of” constructions, and several ideas are placed together without enough explanation of their relationship. For instance, the discussion moves from elderly readers to core book readers and then to news reliability in one paragraph. Grouping related reasons and using clearer references between sentences would make the progression smoother and bring the cohesion closer to consistently flexible control.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “audiobooks,” “convenient,” “reliable source,” and “authentic.” These choices communicate your ideas clearly, and you attempt some topic-specific expressions. However, several phrases are imprecise or informal, such as “checkout the news,” “online stuff,” and “some other sort of activity.” There is also repetition of “books and newspaper,” which limits the range and precision of the discussion. Aim for more natural collocations and a more formal register—for example, “access news,” “digital content,” and “while carrying out other activities.” More precise wording would help express distinctions between online news, digital books, and printed publications.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “as,” “while,” and “as people can listen.” Most sentences are understandable, and grammatical errors do not generally obstruct your meaning. Some errors remain in sentence construction and punctuation. For example, “I agree with this statement, as time has passed, a spike…” joins ideas awkwardly; separating this into two sentences would improve control. In “Many people especially elderly ones,” commas are needed around the inserted phrase, and “the number of books and newspaper purchased will go down” would require a clearer grammatical construction. Continue practising accurate clause boundaries, articles, and singular/plural agreement while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
