IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that in upcoming period, nobody will pay for physical books or newspaper as they will be available at free of cost on internet. Reading online is also convinient because it can be accessed from anywhere at any sake of time. I disagree to the stance to a large extent that physical books will no longer remain popular among people.

The primary reason why people are losing interest to spend on printed newspaper or books is that due to increasing advancement in internet. Due to the high availibility and feasibility of virtual newspaper or e-books people no longer need to go at library or book shope to find specific book or spend money on it. For instance, if someone is travelling, they do not have to caryy a physical book with laguage, it simply can be read on a mobile phone. In the future, the trend of virtualisation will become more intense, as a result, no-one would like to buy a printed book as they are already available and is more convinient on internet.

However, reading from the screen can be uncomfortable for some people. As reading from screen take longer time compare to the page because of scrolling and brightness features, many people prefer to read a printed books instead. A book is also considered as a decent possession to give as a gift to any person as a well-wish or also as a present on someone's achievement. This are the facts enough to contend that, although, the popularity of printed books decrease, it will still hold its original value in future.

In conclusion, I largely agree to the point that nobody would prefer to buy printed books in the future as the advantages of e-books clearly outweigh the disadvantages. However physical books will still be purchased by many people as they hold true values.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You present a position and discuss both the convenience of digital reading and reasons printed books may remain valued. The travel example supports the practical advantages of e-books, while the points about screen discomfort and books as gifts address the opposing view. However, the position is not fully consistent: the introduction says you disagree that print will disappear, but the conclusion says you largely agree that nobody will prefer to buy printed books. This makes your overall response difficult to interpret. Some claims, such as that people will no longer want printed books, are asserted rather than sufficiently explained. State one clear extent of agreement and develop the reasons supporting that position more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the contrast between digital convenience and the continuing appeal of print gives it a basic structure. Linking phrases such as “For instance,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. However, progression is weakened by the conflicting positions in the opening and conclusion, and some connections between ideas are unclear. The first body paragraph repeats the claim that online books are convenient without adding much development, while the second moves from screen discomfort to gift-giving rather abruptly. Use clearer topic sentences, explain how each example supports the paragraph’s main point, and ensure the conclusion follows the position established in the introduction.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “advancement,” “virtual newspaper,” “possession,” and “popularity,” and the reader can generally understand your intended meaning. There are also attempts to express distinctions between online and printed reading. However, the range is limited by repeated references to “convenient” and “books,” and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “at free of cost,” “at any sake of time,” and “with laguage.” Spelling errors such as “convinient,” “availibility,” and “caryy” also reduce precision. Build a more accurate range of topic vocabulary and check spelling; for example, use natural phrases such as “available free of charge” and “at any time.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including a conditional example beginning “if someone is travelling” and a contrast introduced by “although.” These attempts show some range, but complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the argument less clear. Examples include “people no longer need to go at library,” “As reading from screen take longer time,” and “This are the facts,” where articles, agreement and sentence construction are not controlled. The final sentence also shifts awkwardly between “nobody would prefer” and “will still be purchased.” Practise checking subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals and complete sentence patterns, then proofread each sentence for a clear grammatical subject and verb.
