IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Internet and modern technical ehancement have eased the life of people in the terms of reading and minimising the traditional newspapers and books. Some individuals believe that in future, nobody will buy printed newspaper or books to read as eveything will be available online without paying for that.

I agree to the statement because artificial intelligence and technology is significatly increasing and modern innovations are replacing the traditional ways of reading. The internet and a smartphone or laptop are enough for saving pennies rather than purchasing printed newspapers or books.

Another reason for my positive response to the point is that, important information can be highligted and while reading if something is unclear to the person, he/she will use internet to make the point clear and can imagine the clear picture in front of them.

People who will be affected in the future will be the elders, who are not familiar with the technology and still prefer books and newspaper for reading.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

Your position is clear: you agree that online reading will reduce purchases of printed materials, and you give relevant reasons, including saving money and using online tools to clarify information. However, the response addresses the topic only partially. The claim that everything will be available online for free is accepted without examining whether all books and newspapers will actually be free, and the point about older people is introduced but not explained or connected to your overall view. The reasons are also brief and general, with no examples or development. The response is below the required minimum length, which limits how fully you can address the question. Develop each reason with explanation and examples, and consider a qualification or counterargument.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic, understandable sequence: an introduction, a clear statement of agreement, supporting reasons, and a final point about older readers. Linking phrases such as “Another reason” help signal the progression. However, the overall development is limited, and the final sentence feels disconnected because it does not explain whether older people will continue buying print or how this affects your position. Some links within sentences are also unclear, particularly “important information can be highlighted and while reading if something is unclear.” Use separate, focused paragraphs for each main idea, explain how each supports your argument, and make references between sentences more explicit. This would create a more sustained progression rather than a list of points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “artificial intelligence,” “traditional ways of reading,” and “modern innovations,” and the main meaning is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, spelling, or collocation problems reduce precision. For example, “technical ehancement” and “eveything” contain spelling errors, while “saving pennies” is informal and does not fit the essay’s academic tone particularly well. “Make the point clear” is also vague in this context. Aim for more precise expressions and check spelling carefully; for instance, explain that digital texts can be accessed at little or no cost, or that online searches can clarify unfamiliar information. Avoid repeating broad terms such as “technology” without adding specific detail.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You communicate your main position using a mixture of simple and longer sentence forms, and the reader can follow the central argument. There are, however, recurring problems with agreement, articles, and sentence construction. In “artificial intelligence and technology is significantly increasing,” the compound subject requires a plural verb, and the phrasing of “in future” needs an article or a more natural time expression. The sentence beginning “Another reason…” also combines several ideas in a way that makes its structure difficult to follow. The final sentence, “People who will be affected in the future will be the elders,” is grammatically possible but awkwardly constructed. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and divide complex ideas into clear, controlled sentences, while retaining some variety in structure.
