IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

No one will purchase the hard form of newspaper or books in the future because they will have opportunity to read anything through internet with zero payment. From my perspective, this claim is true somehow but not for all the readers. Some readers always want comfort, relaxation and realistic vibes of reading, so that they select printed form of books or magzines.

To start with, internet has changed the life totally and has a significant effect on various old methods. This is fact that every content whether from book or newspaper is now available online. Anyone can read any type of book without pay any charges by just using mobile phone or laptop however he is sitting elsewhere in the world. Most of people are going to prefer online reading nowadays due to its convenient reasons.

To diverse that some of people still feel comfort to read through physical books. They read printed newspaper while doing their breakfast instead of reading news through mobile phones. A good reader must choose to read via printed books still having latest technologies including blog websites, ebooks and social media platforms. To be honest, the physical presence of books have their own values although they are not cost effective. In addition, readers also have habits to make a collection of books in their homes that's why they spent to purchase books.

To conclude, there are many chances that most of people will start read through online in the future, nevertheless, the ratio the printed books reader will never become zero. Book lovers will always buy books to read and display them on their book shelfs. Thus, I am just partially agreed with the given statement however i can not be disagreed with it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you partly agree that online reading will become dominant, while arguing that some people will continue to buy printed books. You address both sides with relevant points, including convenience and free access online, alongside the comfort of print, breakfast newspaper reading, and collecting books. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that “every content” is available online and free is broad, and the point about printed books’ “own values” could be clarified with a specific reason, such as ease of concentration or reduced screen use. Develop these points and connect them more directly to whether printed newspapers and books will disappear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression from online convenience to reasons for retaining print is generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “To start with,” “In addition,” and “To conclude” help signal stages in the argument. At times, however, linking is mechanical or the relationship between ideas is unclear. “To diverse that” does not clearly introduce a contrast, and “A good reader must choose” interrupts the paragraph’s reasoning rather than extending it. Use more precise transitions and make each paragraph develop one central point in a clear sequence. The conclusion repeats the position but could summarise the main reasons more effectively.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “physical books,” “online reading,” “latest technologies,” and “collection,” so the main ideas are understandable. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “realistic vibes,” but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural and reduce precision. Examples include “hard form” for printed format, “zero payment,” “convenient reasons,” and “the ratio the printed books reader.” Spelling errors such as “magzines” and “shelfs” also affect accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and check word forms: for instance, describe online material as “available free of charge” and say that readers “prefer the convenience of” digital reading. This would make the argument clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a concession in “although they are not cost effective” and a longer sentence beginning “Anyone can read…”. The overall meaning is usually clear, but some grammatical errors recur in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “the physical presence of books have” should use a singular verb, while “most of people” needs an article or a different construction. “They spent to purchase books” uses an incorrect verb form, and the final sentence, “I am just partially agreed,” is not grammatically formed. Practise accurate present-tense patterns and review sentence boundaries, especially where clauses are joined with “however.”
