IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is often argued that no one is going to purchase old traditional newspaper or books in coming years. However, they will be able to study everything online without paying any cost. While some people may disagree this view, I partially agree with this statement because online access cannot relace the old learing method of books and articles.
The main reason for my view is that printed form material is beneficial for learners. It enables them to stay focus and concenterate on their studies without any distraction. For instance, those students who read books and articles are more focused than those learners who study or prefer online learning. A study shows that students who regularly read books are more intelligent than those one who study online. As a result, old traditional printed material enables students stay focused.
Another key argument is that online learning also plays a crucial role in understanding matters in a better way. It enables students to find everything efficiently and it also saves time and cost. it is also convenient for remote area learners. To illustrate, a student who lives far from university and could not able to attend classes regularly. In this case online learning is beneficial for them. Therefore, online leraning has also some advantages for students.
In conclusion, some people argue that old traditional books or newspaper method is more convenient. However, I partially agree with this statement online access has also some merits on the other hand we cannot neglect the power of printed material such as books and newspaper. I believe, both sources of learning are reliable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is that you partially agree, and the essay gives relevant reasons for retaining printed material as well as recognising benefits of online learning. The points about concentration and access for students in remote areas address the topic, but the response only partly answers the central prediction about whether people will stop buying printed newspapers and books. The discussion shifts towards learning methods, and the claim that book readers are “more intelligent” is asserted without convincing support. Your conclusion says both sources are reliable, but does not clearly explain how far you expect printed publications to remain in use. Develop the comparison and support each main point with a clearer explanation or example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting different benefits, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “For instance,” “Another key argument,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the essay. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes repetitive: the first body paragraph repeats that printed material helps students focus, while the second moves from online efficiency to remote access without fully connecting these points. Some references are also unclear, such as “those one” and “them,” and the conclusion’s contrast between printed and online sources is compressed. Build each paragraph around one main claim, explain it in sequence, and use pronouns with clear antecedents.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “printed material,” “distraction,” “convenient,” and “remote area learners.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “plays a crucial role” and “As a result.” However, the range is limited by repeated wording around “students,” “online,” and “printed,” and several inaccurate or awkward choices make parts less natural: “old traditional,” “without paying any cost,” and “the power of printed material.” Spelling errors such as “relace,” “learing,” and “leraning” are noticeable. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, distinguish reading publications from taking online classes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a concession in the opening and a conditional example beginning “A student who lives far from university…”. Meaning is generally understandable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms occur often enough to affect clarity. For example, “some people may disagree this view” needs a preposition, and “enables students stay focused” needs an infinitive marker. The remote-student example is a sentence fragment, while “I partially agree with this statement online access…” needs punctuation or a linking word between its clauses. There are also agreement and article problems, as in “those one.” Practise complete sentence patterns and check verb forms, articles, and clause boundaries.
