IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is commonly believed by many people that in the upcoming times, the traditional way of reading such as reading newspapers and books will be replaced by online modes, where individuals can read free of cost. In my opinion, Online availabilty of reading materials provide much more variety and freedom to read at anytime and people will shift to onilne reading.

Firstly, technology or online services give much more variety and options to read. Unlike traditional forms of reading including books and newspaper, we have access to a wide range of topics and issues on internet. Additionally, most of the books you read online comes free of cost, you do not need to pay anything. Moreover, it also tells us about the feedbacks of readers which helps in the selection of topics. For example, if a person is interested in science-fiction theories, internet provides many options with different authors and also there is an option on their websites about the views of different people. On the other hand, if we want to know about a certain book, we have to look for its reader to give his opinion.

Secondly, online reading gives a feedom to read something at any time. Some people loves to read during travelling, some loves to read while walking and some likes to read whenever they have a free time slot. So carrying a book and newspaper is seen to be problematic for some individuals. For instance, if a person gets a free time in between his work and he wants to read, he can simply use his mobile or laptop and starts his reading. Hence, it shows we are not bound to carry physical reading items with ourselves, instead with the advancement of technology, we can access any topic any time.

In conclusion, people will discard traditional newspaper and books, but they continue to read their preffered topics using online modes with paying, because it provides us with numerous options and freedom to read anytime.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you expect online reading to replace printed newspapers and books, and you support this with variety, reader feedback, and convenience. These points are relevant and address the central prediction. However, the response does not fully explore the claim that people will read online without paying. You mention that most online books are free, but do not consider whether all desired material will be free or why people might still buy printed copies. The examples illustrate convenience and choice, but some claims remain broad, such as saying people will discard traditional books and newspapers. Develop the opposing possibility and explain your reasons more fully to make the argument more complete and convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. The sequence from variety to convenience is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” help identify the stages of the argument. Cohesion is sometimes mechanical, however, because several sentences begin with “Additionally,” “Moreover,” or “So.” Some references are also unclear or awkward, such as “it also tells us” and “their websites,” where the reader must infer what “it” or “their” refers to. Use a wider range of linking methods, and connect examples more explicitly to the main point of each paragraph.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including topic-related phrases such as “traditional forms of reading,” “a wide range of topics,” and “advancement of technology.” There are also attempts at more specific wording, for example “science-fiction theories” and “free time slot.” However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural collocations reduce accuracy: “availabilty,” “onilne,” “feedom,” and “preffered” are misspelled, while “feedbacks of readers” and “online modes” are not natural choices in this context. Repetition of “read,” “options,” and “free” also limits range. Aim for more precise expressions and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which helps in the selection of topics” and conditional structures such as “if a person gets a free time.” Most ideas remain understandable, and the paragraphing gives your sentences a clear context. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with subject–verb agreement and verb forms: “Online availability … provide,” “books you read online comes,” and “some people loves.” There are also problems with articles and sentence construction, as in “a free time” and the comma splice in “you do not need to pay anything.” Review agreement and article use, and separate independent clauses with a full stop or a suitable conjunction. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response.
