IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Rise in technology and availability of resources on the internet has led to decline in physical aspects of reading like newspaper or books and poses a concern for future, when newspapers and books would be paperless. I highly agree with this statement and will express my reasons for it in this essay.
Technological advancement has caused a shift in the reader community as well as publication industry, with more people shifting to paperless ways to gain access to news and entertainment in the form books and stories. There are several reasons behind this change. Firstly, In this new era of modernisation where indiviuals are striding to build their future, most of the people do not find the time to sit and read newspaper every morning like they used to back in the day. Moreover, digital print gives them the freedom to read at their own pace and time without the extra burden of carrying a book with them. For example, many people read news on their cell phones while travelling to work on a metro which allows them to enjoy their travel and also save money from buying newspaper everyday which they might not read.
There is also an environmental factor to this development. Everday Millions of newspapers are printed which causes environmental harm as trees are cut for paper manufacturing. Other important factor is the availability of online platforms which are far cheaper than buying newspapers or hard copies of books. For example platforms like Amazon kindle allows cheaper monthly subscription to users that allows them access to a wide range of books. I believe all these concerns will result in a total shift from paper based to online platforms which offer cheaper or free and convenient way of reading.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree that reading will move online, and you give relevant reasons involving convenience, environmental impact, and lower costs. The examples of commuters reading news on phones and Kindle subscriptions help make the argument concrete. This meets the task well, but the discussion is uneven: convenience and environmental concerns receive some explanation, while the claim that online reading will be free is not examined, and the essay does not consider why some people may continue buying printed books or newspapers. To strengthen the response, address the wording of the prediction more directly and develop the reasons with clearer explanation of how they could lead to printed publications becoming uncommon.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from your position to reasons and examples, and the ideas are generally easy to follow. Paragraphing separates the introduction from the supporting discussion, while markers such as “Firstly,” “Moreover,” and “For example” help signal relationships between points. However, the body is presented as one long paragraph despite covering several distinct reasons, and some transitions feel mechanical. The link between environmental harm and the claim that online platforms are cheaper could be made more explicit. Use separate paragraphs for convenience and environmental/economic reasons, and connect each example directly to the point it supports. This would make the progression clearer and cohesion less dependent on repeated signposting.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “technological advancement,” “publication industry,” “environmental factor,” and “online platforms.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some less common expressions show an attempt to write in an academic style. However, several word choices and collocations are imprecise or unnatural, such as “physical aspects of reading,” “digital print,” and “extra burden,” while “paperless ways” is repeated in meaning by later references to online reading. There are also spelling and form errors, including “indiviuals” and “Everday.” Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully; for instance, describe a shift to “digital formats” rather than “paperless ways.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which allows them to enjoy their travel” and a subordinate clause beginning “where individuals are striving.” The overall meaning remains clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors recur. Examples include the missing article in “Rise in technology,” the awkward construction “when newspapers and books would be paperless,” and the agreement problem in “platforms like Amazon Kindle allows.” Several sentences also run together without spaces after full stops, and capitalisation is inconsistent, as in “Firstly, In” and “Everday Millions.” Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and sentence boundaries, then proofread punctuation. More accurate control of these forms would make your varied sentence structures more effective.
