IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In coming years, no ane will buy printed newspaper or printed books because ghey will be able to read everything they want online on internet without paying. I partially agree and partially disagree with this. This idea has many advantages as well as disadvantages too. In future, people will get anything they want to read on internet. Reading on screeens has both positive and negative impacts on readers.

Reading newspaper or books on screens will be favourable for the individuals because they will be able to read anywhere without any problem. They will not worry about the place to read newspaper or a book. This idea will be beneficial for them because they will not worry about purchasing or spending money on books. They will not restrict to go to a shop first then purchase the book or newspaper they want, rather, they will be able to do it anywhere without spending money which is very convenient. They will be able to read any kind of book according to their interest. They will also be able to get knowledge about the daily events of society.

This idea also have some disadvantages. If they read online they become will become lazzy. They will not be able to do work on time and as a result they will turn into a careless person. Moreover, if they do this on screens this will cause a risk of health issues like disorders of eyes. If they read online they will leave the habit of physical reading.

In conclusion, reading newspaper or books online rather than physically has various good impacts on citizens but also the bad impacts on them. So i partially agree and partially disagree with that idea.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address the topic and state a position—“I partially agree and partially disagree”—then give reasons on both sides, including convenience and possible eye problems. However, the position is not fully explained: the essay does not clarify why some people would continue buying printed books or newspapers despite free online access. Several points are asserted rather than developed, such as the claim that online reading makes people “lazy” and careless; explain the cause and give a relevant example. The discussion also shifts between newspapers and books without comparing them or showing whether your view applies equally to both. To strengthen the response, make your degree of agreement more precise and support each main reason with explanation or an example. The response meets the required length; nine words copied from the task prompt were excluded from the count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph about benefits, a paragraph about drawbacks, and a conclusion. This makes the main direction easy to follow, and transitions such as “Moreover” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between ideas. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes repetitive: the benefits paragraph repeats that readers can access material anywhere and avoid spending money, without clearly separating or extending these points. The opening also repeats the prompt’s claim before presenting your position. Some connections between claims are unclear, particularly the move from reading online to becoming careless. Group related ideas more tightly, use pronouns with clear references, and explain how each supporting point connects to your argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “purchasing,” “convenient,” “daily events,” and “health issues.” However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, especially “read,” “online,” “idea,” and “worry.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “lazzy,” “physical reading,” and “get knowledge about the daily events of society”; these can make the reader pause or interpret your meaning less precisely. Spelling errors such as “ane,” “ghey,” and “screeens” also reduce control. Build a more varied set of expressions for print and digital media, and check spelling and collocations carefully. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish convenience, cost, access, and health effects.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, using clauses with “because,” “if,” and “as a result,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. However, control is inconsistent, particularly in verb forms and agreement. For example, “This idea also have” should use a singular verb, while “they become will become” contains an incorrect verb sequence. The sentence “They will not restrict to go to a shop” is also not grammatically complete in its current form. Articles and sentence boundaries need attention as well, and the final “i” should be capitalised. Practise building accurate complex sentences before adding more clauses, and proofread each sentence for subject–verb agreement, verb order, and punctuation.
