IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In upcoming times, there is the prediction that people will not buy printed versions of newspapers or books, as they can easily read anything available on the internet, regardless of paying. I strongly agree with this statement because digital media provides a bunch of information and is a suitable way of accessing it. It is costly and time-consuming to read physically from books.

With the advent of digital tools and social media, there is the load of information and data available on every platform for the people. They tend to read anything they want, regardless of waiting for the newspaper at home or buying books from the market. The trend of reading from physical sources has almost finished as people find searching for the relevant information online more convenient. It saves their money and unnecessary travel or hurdles to find the book of their choice. They can find their requested source from the internet with the ready-go facility. For example, many open-source websites are created where people can easily read books and newspapers online, and there is also the facility to download them for future read.

Reading from physical means like newspapers and books can be time-consuming. There is limited information available, and people have to search for the relevant news or knowledge they want. Furthermore, buying books from the market can be costly, and people have to spend a huge amount of their money to study them. These problems will be solved in the future, as people can rely on their smartphones to see particular details with ease. For instance, the portable document format (PDF) of various books has been made, which has compressed large books into a pocket version.

In conclusion, accessing information online can be easier and less expensive than reading limited news and details from physical books and newspapers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree that online access will replace buying printed material, and the conclusion restates this view. You give relevant reasons, including convenience, reduced expense and the portability of digital books, with examples such as open-source websites and PDFs. However, the response does not fully explore the claim that people will be able to read everything online without paying. It focuses mainly on convenience and cost, without considering whether all content will actually be free or why some readers may continue to buy print. The point that physical reading is “time-consuming” is also asserted rather than clearly explained. Develop these aspects with more specific reasoning to make the argument more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting reasons, and a conclusion. Each body paragraph has a recognisable focus, and examples generally follow the points they support. The progression is understandable, but some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. For instance, “Furthermore” introduces another cost point, while the relationship between limited information in print and the claim that reading it takes time could be explained more explicitly. Phrases such as “They” and “these problems” also refer broadly to earlier ideas, so the reader must infer their precise meaning. Use more precise referencing and connect each example directly to the claim it illustrates to make the flow smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “digital tools,” “relevant information,” “open-source websites,” and “portable document format.” These choices help communicate your main ideas, and the meaning is generally clear. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “a bunch of information,” “ready-go facility,” “future read,” and “compressed large books into a pocket version.” Some repetition of “people,” “books,” and “information” also limits flexibility. Aim for more accurate collocations and formal phrasing, particularly when describing online access and digital formats. This would make your argument sound more precise and academic without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “as,” “where,” and “which.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and errors do not generally prevent understanding. Some grammatical choices are less controlled, however. In “there is the load of information and data available,” the construction is awkward, and “there is also the facility to download them for future read” has an incomplete or unsuitable noun phrase. The sentence beginning “For example, many open-source websites…” also joins several ideas in a way that would benefit from clearer clause structure. Review article use and noun forms, and vary sentence patterns while keeping each sentence’s relationships clear.
