IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Keeping my vision in the light, i highly support the fact that nobody will buy printed newspapers or books since they are already being blessed with the convinience of receiving those services for free with the help of internet.

With the help of internet, not only do people have the leverage to read with convinience but it also gives them more variety and choices to choose from. They are not just restricted to whatever they have in hand but they can switch sites and move to a completely new content within seconds without the need to go to a shop or wait for the next book or newspaper to come in stock again to buy. For example, if you are reading a book and you get bored of it you are not much in guilt because you didnt spend money so you didnt waste anything on it and you can easily switch to whatever you feel like reading instead.

Another factor is how it helps them save money easily. They dont have to spend a fortune on them or pay monthly fees of newspaper to someone anymore. People can easily open their smart phones and download whatever they have interest in and start reading it right at the moment. For example, if i want to read this new book that is jsut launched, i do not have to look for my budget or see if it is worth the money i am paying for. i can simply just download it read it. If i like it i can keep on reading and if not i can just find another good book, download it and start reading

In conclusion, I completely support the view that people are must more in benefit with reading books and newspaper from the internet rather than spending money on the stuff like newspaper and books.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you strongly support the prediction that people will stop buying printed books and newspapers because online reading is free and convenient. You give relevant reasons, including wider choice, instant access and saving money, and the examples about changing books and downloading a new release help illustrate these points. However, the response mainly explains why online reading is attractive rather than fully examining whether printed publications will disappear in the future. The claim that online material is free is also accepted without qualification, and the conclusion repeats your view without adding a final insight. To develop the response further, address the future prediction directly and consider a limitation or counterargument, such as readers who prefer print or online content that requires payment.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an opening position, two body paragraphs presenting reasons, and a conclusion. The paragraphs are generally focused, and phrases such as “Another factor” signal a shift to the second reason. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes repetitive: the second paragraph returns several times to the idea of switching to another book, while the third repeats that online reading saves money. Some links are also awkward or unclear, including “not only do people have the leverage … but it also gives them,” where the reference of “it” is uncertain. The final paragraph is brief and largely restates the introduction. Group each reason more tightly, use clear references, and make the conclusion synthesise the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “variety,” “restricted,” “monthly fees,” and “download,” and the topic remains understandable. However, the range is limited by repeated everyday wording such as “easily,” “good book,” “whatever,” and “spend money.” Several choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate or unnatural, for example “keeping my vision in the light,” “blessed with the convenience,” “leverage to read,” and “must more in benefit.” Spelling and informal forms also affect control, including “convinience,” “didnt,” and “jsut.” Aim for precise, natural academic expressions and check spelling; for instance, describe online access as “convenient” rather than “a leverage,” and use “benefit from” rather than “in benefit.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt some complex structures, such as “not only do people … but it also gives them” and the conditional example beginning “if you are reading a book.” These show an effort to vary sentence forms, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, control is inconsistent: the “not only” construction has mismatched subjects, and “People can easily open their smart phones and download whatever they have interest in” has an incomplete grammatical pattern (“have an interest in”). There are also missing apostrophes and sentence-boundary problems, especially in the long final example, where several clauses run together. Capitalisation of “I” is inconsistent. Practise accurate complex sentences, complete clause structures, and punctuation that separates ideas clearly.
