IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In near future no one will purchase printed newspapers and books just because they will be able to read each and everything they need online without the need of paying. I completely agree with this view because nowadays internet is accessible to everyboady as well as most of the people have smartphones. They can scroll, search, read and buy anything online just with one click.

Firstly, in today's era the world has became a global village and everyone is connected through the internet. Individuals having smartphones have access to every social media app available which is on the internet. They can watch any news and can read any book free of cost online without the need for going to the market and buying a newspaper or book. In addition the demand of smarphones and the people buying ones have greatly increased in numbers. It is also very convenient to watch news online as compared to waiting for a newspaper to arrive in the early morning and wait for the news which is already happened one day before. Secondly the prices of mobile phones are becoming cheap day by day and they are accessible for everyone even the people who can not afford to buy a house for himself can easily buy mobile phone and use it as his daily driver.

Furthermore, in near future almost all the people will have mobile phones in their pocket because a smartphone is no longer a luxury item and more and more people will prefer to watch news online despite the availability of a printed newspaper.

In conclusion, while printed newspapers had their own era but i completely agree with view that more and more people in near future will prefer online reading of newspaper and Ebook.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you completely agree that online access will replace printed newspapers and books, and you give relevant reasons, including convenience, smartphone ownership and the speed of online news. However, the response only partly develops the full claim. It focuses mainly on newspapers and smartphones, while the future of printed books and the claim that online reading will be free receive little explanation. Some support is also broad—for example, saying that everyone can read any book online free of cost—without showing why this is likely or considering limitations such as paid content or access. To strengthen the response, develop separate, specific reasons for both books and newspapers and explain how they support your prediction.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, a body paragraph using “Firstly” and “Secondly,” a further point, and a conclusion. The main ideas are generally relevant and the reader can follow the overall argument. However, progression is somewhat repetitive: smartphone access and the convenience of online news recur without being clearly distinguished as separate stages of the argument. Linking phrases such as “In addition” and “Furthermore” sometimes connect ideas mechanically rather than showing their precise relationship. The paragraph beginning “Furthermore” largely repeats the earlier point about smartphone ownership. Grouping related reasons into focused paragraphs and using clearer references between claims would make the argument more coherent and less repetitive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the topic, including phrases such as “global village,” “accessible,” “convenient,” and “luxury item.” There are also attempts at topic-related wording, such as “printed newspaper” and “online reading.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of basic terms such as “people,” “buy,” “read,” and “online,” and some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, including “each and everything,” “daily driver,” and “the demand of smartphones.” Spelling errors such as “everyboady” and “smarphones” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and vary key terms—for example, distinguish digital news access from purchasing or borrowing e-books.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a reason clause with “because” and a contrast introduced by “while.” The overall meaning is usually understandable, but errors occur in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction. For example, “the world has became” should be “the world has become,” and “the people buying ones have greatly increased in numbers” is awkwardly constructed. In “people who can not afford to buy a house for himself,” the pronoun does not agree with the plural noun, and the article and phrasing also need attention. Some long sentences combine several ideas, making control less secure. Practise accurate complex clauses and check verb forms, agreement and punctuation when editing.
