IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that in coming years no one will purchase printed materials due to the advent of technology and people are able to browse and access useful information from online at their comfort zone. I largely disagree that online reading will replace tradional printed materials because internet materials are copyright and have limited content.

One significant advantage of using online platforms as source of information is that they are convenient, readers do not move to physical libraries in order to get knowlege, they google tapestry of classified learning resources from the websites . This is to say that internet carry all books of different disciplines at ago and people choose what is worth to their demands. For instance , a research student in Kenya cannot move to Harvard university to go and read a particular book, he googles the title of the material and enjoy its content at home. Consequently online reading saves on time and resources.

However, printed materials cannot be replaced by internet readers, as they are more reliable and authentic. People of all classes are able to access these physical readers, also the authenticity of printed media is original. Books carries verified information and true facts compared to online media which depend on search engines for information. Furthermore, books and newspapers arouses interests to do more reading, since chapters are in a chronological order with varied knowledge. For example, a student reading using a book get diverse skills like patience and resilience to read more compared to a learner who rely on smartphone to study.

In conclusion, the role of books in society cannot be replaced by internet materials. Printed materials are availabe to people in various levels of content, thus in can be read by many groups people, unlike online readers limited to individuals with internet connectivity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you largely disagree that online reading will eliminate printed materials, and you address both the convenience of online access and the continuing value of books. The Kenya–Harvard example helps illustrate how online resources can save time, while the points about reliability and reading habits support your disagreement. This meets the task well, though the argument is not equally developed throughout: the online-access paragraph explains its benefits in detail, whereas the claims that printed materials are accessible to all classes and build patience would benefit from clearer explanation and evidence. The opening claim that internet materials are “copyright” is also unclear and does not effectively support your position. Develop each main reason more precisely to make the response more fully convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs on online and printed reading, and a conclusion that restates your view. Linking expressions such as “For instance,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the main stages. Within paragraphs, however, some ideas are joined in long or loosely connected sentences, particularly the explanation of online resources and the example about Harvard. The relationship between the claim that printed materials are accessible to all and the later point about authenticity could also be signposted more clearly. Some transitions feel mechanical, and the conclusion repeats the central position without drawing together the reasons. Use clearer sentence boundaries and more precise referencing to improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “physical libraries,” “classified learning resources,” “authentic,” and “chronological order,” and your meaning is generally understandable. There are also noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems that sometimes make the reader pause. For example, “google tapestry of classified learning resources” is not a natural expression, “internet materials are copyright” does not convey a clear meaning, and “at their comfort zone” is an inaccurate phrase. Spelling errors such as “tradional,” “knowlege,” and “availabe” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural combinations rather than ambitious wording that does not fit the context, and proofread spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “because” and a contrast introduced by “However.” The main ideas remain understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “internet carry” should have a singular verb, while “Books carries” has a plural subject with a singular verb. In “a student reading using a book get,” the verb form and sentence structure need correction. Several sentences also run together, as in the opening of the online-platform paragraph, where separate points are joined with commas. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and dividing long sentences into complete, clearly punctuated units.
