IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In this Essay we will talk about the hypothesis that people prefer the online meduim to read newspaper and books without feeling the need to spend money on them. I wanna strike a balence between the statments as both have their own reason. I can't just can't can't accept one statement over the other one.

Firstly we discuss the part where i'm agreeing in that case if we talk about the benifits of the online reading yeahh its way more cheaper and accessible rather than a book or newspaper . if you wanna read you dont have to go to certain place to buy and then read someone could be just google it and read with ease no hastle just by staying on the bed the person can get to read what they wanted to read.

On the other hand the virtual books and newspapers has it own advantages someone can take them to any place of the world and read it there although its the age of the internet but there comes the certain locations yo can't access the internet to search for the material you are interested to read also by reading through a printed book it looks more productive and interesting to read. So, the books would help you with the certain locations and emotions.

Both comes with their very own down sides. The printed material is very costly and the e books are not accessible at every location also can effect the health by causing headache and eye disease. The old books can also be lost from the internet but you can always keep the printed one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address the topic by discussing the convenience of online reading and the portability and practical value of printed materials. However, your position is not consistently clear: “I wanna strike a balence” suggests a balanced view, but you do not state precisely how far you agree with the prediction that printed books and newspapers will disappear. Several points are asserted rather than explained, such as printed reading being “more productive and interesting” and books helping with “emotions.” Develop these with specific reasoning or examples, and directly consider whether free online access will make printed material obsolete. A clear thesis and a conclusion that answers the question would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic structure, with an opening, a paragraph about online reading, a contrast about print, and a final discussion of disadvantages. “Firstly” and “On the other hand” help signal the shift between viewpoints. However, progression is not always clear: the final paragraph introduces drawbacks of both formats without linking them to your overall position, and the essay ends without a concluding summary. Some connections are also difficult to follow, particularly “So, the books would help you with the certain locations and emotions.” Use paragraphs to develop one main point at a time, connect each point explicitly to your argument, and finish with a concise conclusion. This would reduce the sense of separate, loosely connected observations.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “accessible,” “virtual books,” “printed material,” and “internet,” so the reader can understand the general subject. However, the range is limited and several informal or inaccurate choices weaken the academic tone: “I wanna,” “yeahh,” and “way more cheaper” are unsuitable for this essay, while “strike a balance” is misspelled and does not clearly express your position. Spelling errors such as “meduim,” “benifits,” and “hastle” are noticeable. Aim for precise, formal expressions and check spelling. For example, describe online reading as “more affordable and convenient,” and refer to “access to digital content” rather than repeating general terms such as “read” and “books.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentences and contrasts, but the range of sentence structures is limited and errors occur frequently enough to make parts difficult to read. For example, “the virtual books and newspapers has it own advantages” has problems with subject–verb agreement and possessives, while “someone could be just google it” has an incorrect verb pattern. The opening also contains the repeated construction “I can't just can't can't accept,” which disrupts meaning. Punctuation and sentence boundaries need attention, especially in the long sentence beginning “Firstly we discuss.” Practise forming accurate simple sentences first, then combine ideas using controlled clauses. Check agreement, articles, verb forms, and punctuation when editing.
