IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the coming years people would not prefer buying physical books or newspapers because all the information would be available online without paying. This essay will evaluate this statement with reasons.

The advent of technology has led to a considerable reduction in the number of people reading physical copies of newspapers and books. This is due to the the accessibility of mobile phone and tablets. For example, a person who read newspapers earlier can now get all the information with a tap on the phone. For avid readers, E-books eliminate the stress of purchasing a copy they would barely read more than twice. Kindle, which is a device in the form of a tablet helps book readers have access to thousands of books, this makes it better investment for a family full of readers as compared to buying books. E- news allows people to have access to information immediately instead of waiting for the next day.

On the other hand, i believe that while there are multiple advantages of being able to read everything online these mediums will never fully replace physical books and newspapers. Physical copies allow a person to feel and register information better than in a mobile phone. Out of the hundred things we see online, it is very difficult to filter what is authentic or accurate. Newspapers are published through reliable authors and include information which is verified. E books on the flip side, allow a bookworm to underline highlight and have a copy of the book for emotional purposes. Some readers often maintain a collection of books because they prefer going back to their books and consider it personal.

To recapitulate, while i believe that e-books and e-news has seen a tremendous growth it can never completely replace physical copies because of the flexibility, personal touch and quicker access.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both sides of the claim and make your position clear: online reading is growing, but you do not believe it will completely replace printed material. Relevant support includes the convenience of accessing news immediately and readers’ attachment to personal book collections. However, the response does not fully examine the claim that online reading will be available without payment; this key condition is largely assumed rather than discussed. Some points also need fuller explanation—for example, the claim that print helps people “register information better” is asserted without support, and the reliability argument could distinguish verified news from the wider range of online sources. Develop these ideas and connect each more directly to your degree of agreement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph about the growth of digital reading, a contrasting paragraph supporting print, and a conclusion. The contrast signalled by “On the other hand” helps readers follow the shift in position, and examples generally appear alongside the points they support. Some connections are less smooth or precise. The opening says the essay “will evaluate this statement,” which does not establish your own position, while the conclusion introduces “flexibility, personal touch and quicker access” without clearly showing how each supports the argument. The long Kindle sentence also joins several ideas with a comma. Use clearer links between claims and examples, and make the conclusion synthesize the main reasons rather than add a new one.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “physical copies,” “accessibility,” “verified,” “E-books,” and “personal touch,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at less common expressions such as “avid readers” and “tremendous growth.” However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise: “better investment” is not fully explained, “register information” sounds unnatural in this context, and “E-news” is less idiomatic than “online news.” Repetition of “physical copies,” “information,” and “access” also limits flexibility. Aim for more precise phrasing and check conventional collocations; consistent spelling and capitalization of terms such as “e-books” and “I” would also improve control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a relative clause in “Kindle, which is a device in the form of a tablet” and a contrast structure beginning “while there are multiple advantages.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are noticeable. In “the accessibility of mobile phone and tablets,” the article and number do not agree; “E-books … eliminate the stress of purchasing a copy they would barely read” has an unclear reference; and the Kindle sentence joins independent ideas with a comma. The conclusion also has a subject–verb mismatch in “e-books and e-news has seen.” Review agreement, articles, pronoun reference, and sentence boundaries, while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
