IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, news is presented on television along with detailed discussions and updates regarding several issues around the world. In recent years, only elderly people likes to read newspaper whereas book lovers still exist with the same passion. This essay will discuss the most popular question, will printed news become acient by the evolution of online news or articles?

Few years back, people like to watch darama serials and news with their whole family on one screen, which had fixed timings and people made time out of their busy routines to spend a quality time with their family or friends. Now everyone has their personal smart phones which provides all type of information at any time. People like to filter the news as they want, they can skip or replay any news at any time. People find this inventioon very mindful and time efficient as no one needs a fixed schedule just to watch TV. So now everyone is shifted to online news and newspapers are seen rarely in the neighbourhood.

Moreover books have lost their popularity as comapred to last 6 years but it isn't as vanished as newspaper. People like to read books to overcome their screen time and to get on hand knowledge from the authors. Still many people likes to read articles and newsletters to gain updated information for free.

I would agree that online news and articles will replace the printed newspapers. However books will maintain its own space in knowledge as today, there is huge amount of people who loves to read books despite having kindles and e-books.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address the central issue and give a discernible position: online news is likely to replace printed newspapers, while books will retain a place. The discussion of flexible access to news and readers’ continued interest in books is relevant. However, the response does not fully explore the task’s specific prediction that people will read everything online without paying. Free access is mentioned briefly, but there is little consideration of whether all content will be free or why readers might still buy printed material. The opening also focuses on television and elderly readers rather than establishing your view directly. Develop these points with clearer reasons and examples, and keep the distinction between newspapers and books central throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, separate paragraphs about news and books, and a concluding position. Linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “However” help signal the shift between topics, and the final paragraph brings the two strands together. Some progression is less clear within paragraphs, though. The opening moves from television to elderly readers and then to a broad question without a strong connection to the task. In the news paragraph, the sequence from family television to smartphones is understandable but takes several sentences to reach the main point. Use a more direct topic sentence for each body paragraph and make references such as “this invention” explicit, so the reader can follow the argument without having to infer connections.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “fixed timings,” “filter the news,” “screen time,” and “e-books,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more descriptive phrasing, such as “maintain its own space.” However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural combinations reduce accuracy, including “acient,” “inventioon,” “on hand knowledge,” and “as comapred to last 6 years.” Some expressions are vague or informal for an academic argument, such as “the most popular question” and “very mindful.” Aim for precise collocations and check spelling carefully. Choosing words that directly express your reasoning will make the argument sound more controlled and academically appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “However books will maintain its own space … despite having kindles and e-books.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “only elderly people likes” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “everyone has their personal smart phones which provides” contains a mismatch between the plural noun and verb. Tense use is also inconsistent in “Few years back, people like to watch,” and the question in the introduction is not formed as a complete, well-integrated sentence. Review agreement, articles, and past-tense forms, and punctuate embedded questions carefully. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the control shown in your writing.
