IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Newspaper and books are very popular source of knowledge back in few years before the arrival of smartphones. Newspaper are the primary source of current affairs before year 2000 or even after too becuse the television and radio are not common in every home.

The books are source of study or knowledge and used in educational institutes. Books are still using as a primary source of learning in these but the major role in developed countries are now less becuse technology replaced it with digital form.

If we talk about future, the things are going to change rapidly around the globe. This is true because we can see a multiple examples of online products.

From my prospective, newspaper is already stopped in many media printing houses because television already replaced it. Even now a days, news are available in the form of videos on YouTube or on other social media platforms. So newspaper have no future and the final nail in the coffin already did by internet, smartphones and social media.

If we talk about books, it's totally different kind of thing and we need it in printed form in the future too. The major reason behind my this point of view is the use of books, people who loves reading books and the educational institues. Wherever you go around the globe, in the school books are mandatory that's the major reason books will continue in the future too. Even nowadays, books are available in the form of digital print but the use of digital print are not suitable for kids in their early education.

Overall, I'm agree about the newspaper will be closed for printing in future. However, disagree with the point about books printing because books are major and primary source of learning.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear in the conclusion: you expect printed newspapers to disappear but believe printed books will remain. You address both parts of the statement and give relevant reasons, including the availability of news on social media and the continued use of books in schools. However, the discussion of newspapers focuses mainly on television and social media replacing them, rather than directly examining whether people will read news online for free. The claim that books are mandatory in schools also needs more explanation, and the point about digital reading being unsuitable for young children is asserted rather than supported. Develop these ideas with specific examples and explain how they support your view.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: background, discussion of newspapers, discussion of books, and a concluding position. Paragraphing helps distinguish the two main arguments, and phrases such as “If we talk about books” signal a change of focus. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes loose: the opening moves from the past to education and then to future change without a clear link. Some transitions are repetitive, particularly “If we talk about,” and references such as “these” in “in these” are unclear. Organise each body paragraph around one main claim, then explain and illustrate it; use a wider range of linking expressions and clearer references to make the connections smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “current affairs,” “educational institutes,” “digital form,” and “social media platforms,” so the reader can follow the main ideas. There are also attempts at more expressive phrasing, such as “the final nail in the coffin,” though this is rather dramatic for an academic essay. At this level, meaning is generally conveyed, but inaccurate word forms, spelling, and collocations are noticeable: “prospective” for “perspective,” “digital print,” and “primary source of learning” are examples. Some repetition of “books,” “future,” and “source” also limits flexibility. Aim for precise, natural combinations such as “printed publications,” “online news,” and “digital formats,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including a reason clause in “This is true because…” and a contrast in the conclusion. The main message remains understandable, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction occur across the response. Examples include “Newspaper are,” “books are still using,” “news are available,” and “I’m agree.” Some sentences are also awkwardly formed, such as “the final nail in the coffin already did by internet.” Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and verb patterns, and build complex sentences with a clear main clause. Proofreading for articles and tense consistency would improve control while preserving your attempts at varied structures.
