IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is wiely argued that , people will prefer degital screen for reading books and newspaper rether than buying printed books and news paper.

On the one hand it is understandable some people hold the opinion that in future individuals will be more into degital screen , one major reason why human will prefer degital screen is that day by day our country get globalized so that people are useing degital technology in their daily life . This is beacuse its really convinent and reliable for use also effortles. For instance , people use computure , mobile ,tv for thier work also read books newspaper . Another important factor why people should use degital screen is that its handy and less costly for use . This is because during travel individuals must have to carry mobile phone and they can read books in mobile so that they don't need to carry any printed books . For example a books name harry potter , its very thik and heavy also really hustle for carrying .

On the other hand it is conceviable that for read in degital screen everyone have to paid a fix ammount while for buying printed books , people can visit many shopes and burgain . As a consequence , people feel plasure to buy books from shopes . For example in shopes books aren't fix rated while in platform books are fix rated .

In conclusion i firmly hold the view that a balance apprach is the most reasonable based on a disscussed above .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both sides of the topic by explaining the convenience and portability of digital reading, then contrasting this with the enjoyment and bargaining opportunities of buying printed books. However, the position is not fully clear: the introduction describes a likely preference for screens, while the conclusion says a “balance approach” is best without explaining how far you agree with the claim that online reading will be free. The discussion also shifts from whether people will buy printed material to whether digital reading is convenient or costly. Develop the comparison more directly—for example, explain whether free online access is realistic and why some readers would still pay for print—and support each main point with clearer reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph presenting reasons for digital reading, a contrasting paragraph about printed books, and a conclusion. “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help signal the change in viewpoint. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, with repeated openings such as “one major reason” and “another important factor,” followed by “This is because” and “For example.” Some links between ideas are unclear, particularly the move from paying a fixed amount for digital reading to bargaining in shops. Make each paragraph’s central point explicit, connect examples directly to that point, and use referencing and transitions more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “globalized,” “reliable,” “handy,” “less costly,” and “printed books.” These choices communicate basic ideas about access and convenience. However, the range is limited and several spelling errors or imprecise expressions make the writing less clear, such as “degital,” “convienent,” “burgain,” and “fix rated.” Some phrases are also unnatural, including “prefer digital screen” and “for read in digital screen.” Aim for accurate topic-specific collocations and check spelling carefully. For example, use “read on digital devices,” “negotiate a price,” and “fixed price” rather than translating expressions word for word.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including explanations with “because” and examples introduced by “For instance.” This shows an effort to connect reasons and supporting details. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction can make meaning difficult to follow. For example, “people are useing digital technology” and “everyone have to paid” need corrected verb forms, while “people should use digital screen” lacks an appropriate article or plural form. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with spaces before commas and full stops. Practise building accurate sentences first, then add subordinate clauses and check subject–verb agreement and verb patterns.
