IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, there has been growing concern whether printed books are wanished in the future due to online reading material. I partly believe that nobody will purchase books and newpapers because of digital publications and both have their own advantages. Although online reading is convenient and beneficial for the environment, I believe printed books helps to concetrate and some newspaper are not always free.

On the one hand, digital publications provide a wide range of articles and other resources, where individuals can easily read with in their comfort zone.Online books and newpapers have a profound impact on individula's lives because they are convenient and environmental friendly. This is because individuals can read online books and articles without going library and spending much time to finding ralevent books. Another significant factor is that online publications are environmental friendly because these articles are not utilise any form of papers. For instance, citizens can find any kind of news on digital platforms, and not wait for next day's newspaper.

On the other hand, printed books and newspaper are also beneficial because some individuals more focus on printed books than digital books. They are needed some books which are physically being touched and turn their pages. One more significant reason is that some books are not always free and they need some subs. For instance, a significant number of books and their editions are not available online, these editions only find in libraries.

In conclusion, printed books and newspapers provide concentration, whereas digital publications provide convenient and environmental friendly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your response addresses the question and presents a partly balanced position: online reading is described as convenient and environmentally beneficial, while printed books are said to help concentration and some material is unavailable online. These are relevant reasons, and the examples about finding news digitally and locating editions in libraries support the discussion. However, the position is not fully clear: the introduction says you “partly believe” nobody will buy print, but the conclusion mainly lists advantages without directly stating whether you agree with the prediction. Some points, especially the claim that printed books improve concentration and the issue of paid subscriptions, need clearer explanation and development. State your degree of agreement consistently and explain how these reasons affect future purchasing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two sides, and a conclusion. The contrastive signposts “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the main progression, and examples are placed within the relevant paragraphs. This coherent arrangement is a strength. However, some links between sentences are mechanical or unclear, such as “This is because” followed by a broad explanation, and the conclusion does not clearly connect the discussion back to your stated position. There are also run-together sentences, for example “comfort zone.Online books,” which interrupt the flow. Use clearer sentence boundaries and more precise referencing, and make the final paragraph synthesise the arguments rather than simply repeat them.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “digital publications,” “environmental friendly,” “significant factor,” and “editions,” and the intended meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts to use less common expressions, such as “profound impact,” although this is not quite natural in the context. A number of spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “wanished,” “newpapers,” “concetrate,” “individula's,” and “ralevent.” Some collocations are also awkward, including “spending much time to finding” and “some books are not always free and they need some subs.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural combinations, such as “spend time finding relevant books” and “require a subscription.” This would make your vocabulary more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession with “Although” and explanations introduced by “because.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “printed books helps” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “some individuals more focus” and “They are needed some books” have faulty sentence structures. Articles, plurals, and prepositions also need attention, as in “without going library” and “some newspaper are.” Punctuation and spacing are inconsistent: “comfort zone.Online” needs a space and a sentence boundary. Practise building accurate clauses before adding complexity, and check agreement, articles, and plural forms during revision. More consistently controlled complex sentences would strengthen the response.
