IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the near future hard-copy books and newspapers will be replaced by their digital versions. I agree with the statement as advancements in modern technology enables us to access large amount of digital resources for free. Additionally, to save trees from deforestation, people would rather not buy printed materials.

With the new era of digitization, youths from young age opt for digital newsletters via e-mails and e-books through online public libraries as their source of information. Not only does this remove the requirement for physical storage but also enables us faster access to books. For example, a computer can hold more than one thousand books, while a large bookshelf is required to store similar number of books physically. Moreover, poor people would be unable to afford hard-copy books because of their huge collective cost.

Environment enthusiast would naturally prefer digital copies over physical ones. Deforestation severely affects our natural habitat since it can lead to increased levels of carbon dioxide in our environment, thereby causing global warming. To control this phenomenon, people will pick online materials as its production does not require trees. For example, Amazon Kindle offers you access to more than ten thousand books on a single electronic device. As a result, a person can contribute to sustainable development by simply choosing to read digitally.

To conclude, online books and newspapers will replace their traditional physical versions because people would not only be able to access many books for free without the hassle of storing them but can also save trees along the way.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you agree that digital formats will replace printed books and newspapers, and the conclusion restates this view. You address the prompt with relevant reasons, including easier access, lower costs, storage convenience and reduced tree use. The examples about a computer holding many books and the Kindle help illustrate these points. However, the response focuses more on why people may prefer digital reading than on the specific claim that everything will be available online without payment. The point about free access is asserted but not explained or supported, and the environmental argument is more fully developed than the affordability argument. Develop these less-supported aspects and qualify the prediction to make the response more complete and convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion summarises the argument. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “Moreover,” and “As a result” help show relationships between points. This organisation is effective and easy to follow. Some connections are less precise, however: the move from digital storage to the claim that poor people cannot afford printed books is abrupt, and the environmental paragraph’s example of Kindle access does not fully connect to the claim about saving trees. The repeated focus on digital convenience in the opening and conclusion also limits development. Make each paragraph’s central point explicit and ensure each example directly supports it.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “digital resources,” “physical storage,” “deforestation,” “natural habitat,” and “sustainable development.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some less common terms show an effort to discuss technology and the environment precisely. At times, however, word choice or collocation is awkward: “advancements in modern technology” is less natural than “advances in technology,” while “huge collective cost” is unclear. “Environment enthusiast” also needs a more natural form, and “pick online materials” is imprecise. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they reduce fluency and precision. Aim for natural collocations and choose terms that express the intended relationship clearly, especially when discussing affordability and environmental impact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including the inversion in “Not only does this remove … but also enables us faster access” and the cause-and-effect clause beginning “since it can lead to…”. Most sentences are understandable, and the range supports your explanations. Some grammatical errors remain. In the opening, “technology enables” should be “technology enable” if the subject is “advancements,” or the sentence can be recast as “modern technology enables.” “A large amount of digital resources” needs “a large amount of” with an uncountable noun or “a large number of resources.” In the inversion sentence, the parallel structure should be “Not only does this remove …, but it also enables…”. Review agreement, articles and parallel constructions to improve accuracy.
