IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, it is widely recognized that in the future purchasing physical newspapers or book will be diminished considerably because people will be able to read whatever they want through online platforms for free. I strongly disagree with this statement. Although, technology has been facilitated reading books or newspaper through digital sources, many people will be still ineterested in printed documents.

It is clear that technology is highly accessible in these days. Many people often use digital sources, such as book websites or magazines in order to obtain particular information that they want. This developement helped many people as they do not have to pay. However, this is a very beneficial approach but it does not mean that such trend will lead to total disappearance of physical books.

On the one hand , many people are quite old-fashioned and prefer such books. They may get challenges using online platforms , which can be very numerous and time consumning to find what you want exactly , and many people may not expert enough to use them. For example, my father is a baby boomer and he always buy magazines , he prefer such approach as he find it more convinient and easy to get. Subsequently, many individuals will be still using printed version in the future.

On the other hand, printed version of books or other documents are considered to be more reliable. Many people find such versions more suitable as there is no ads or other disrupters. Such attitude often give people with higher amount of concentration and they can be fully involved during reading. For example, one of may classmate was so successful in her studies and she often said that it is because of using paper based lectures , as she can fully focus . Hence , many people find it more beneficial and gives them the exact knowledge they want .

In conclusion, investment in technology may lead to minimise the interest of purchasing printed newspaper or books, nevertheless this does not mean the complete disappearance of such versions. people' interest and being comfortable with using such versions are playing an important role in preservation of such methods in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction—“I strongly disagree”—and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address the central prediction by explaining why printed materials may continue to be bought: some readers prefer familiar formats, while others value fewer distractions and better concentration. The examples about your father and classmate help illustrate these reasons. This is a relevant, developed response, though some claims are broad, such as “many people are quite old-fashioned,” and the discussion focuses more on why people prefer print than on whether online reading will be free or cover everything they want. To strengthen the response further, qualify generalisations and explain more directly how free online access might affect purchasing habits.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. The contrast between “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” helps signal the two supporting points, and examples are placed alongside the ideas they illustrate. Some linking is less controlled, however. “Although” at the start of the introduction is followed by an incomplete contrast, while “This is a very beneficial approach but…” repeats the same relationship awkwardly. There are also occasional spacing and punctuation issues that interrupt the flow. For stronger cohesion, make links between sentences more precise and use pronouns or transitions only when their reference is unmistakable.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “digital sources,” “physical books,” “reliable,” “concentration,” and “disappearance,” which allows you to discuss the issue clearly. There are also attempts at more specific expressions such as “paper-based lectures.” However, inaccurate word choice, spelling, and collocation are noticeable and sometimes make phrases sound unnatural: “ineterested,” “time consumning,” “more convinient,” and “give people with higher amount of concentration.” “Disrupters” is also not the natural term for interruptions such as advertisements. Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common word partnerships, rather than relying on direct translations. More precise vocabulary would make your arguments sound more fluent and assured.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concession with “Although” and longer sentences explaining causes and results. Most of your meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “many people will be still interested” has awkward word order, and “my father … he always buy magazines” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “many people find it more beneficial and gives them,” the verb does not agree with the subject, while “people’ interest … are playing” has problems with both the possessive form and agreement. Punctuation around conjunctions and commas is also inconsistent. Review agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
