IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Newspapers are the source of information all over the world or the areas near your society. It may be more helpful for the people to take information even at home. Newspapers and the books are in printed form and these may be expensive to buy.I agree about this that i will discus below.

Nowadays with the improving technology the things are converting on digital devices and same like this the habits of the people are also changing day by day. About 5 years ago the people took information through the newspapers and read the books to improve their knowledge ,but now,the digital devices mobile phones, televisions take up the place of the printed papers and books. It is less expensive and easy to access the information rather than using newspapers and books.

The people now able to read this kind of papers and books by online system because it is very fast and easy to access the information. The online system is very beneficial even people can take infomation in number of minutes and it is totaly different than papers and books that the people want to read.If i talk about more difference between papers that the people have to read to take the information and the online system in which you can take information by listening the recordings and watching the videos .So it is very easy to take information by videos and recording.

To conclude, this is very easy and fast way to read everything by online digital devices. I agree because people

would be able to read everything that they want online and even without paying it is very easy to awail.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You state a clear overall view in the introduction (“I agree”) and repeat it in the conclusion, so your position is identifiable. You also give relevant reasons, including that digital access is “less expensive” and that people can use recordings and videos. However, the response only partially develops the question: it does not clearly examine whether people will stop buying printed books and newspapers altogether, or distinguish free online material from paid content. The claim that online reading is “without paying” is accepted rather than supported with explanation or examples. To strengthen the response, explain why printed formats may continue to be bought, or develop more fully why online access could replace them, and support each main point with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the ideas generally relate to the topic. The second paragraph moves from changing technology to the convenience of digital devices, while the next discusses online access and multimedia. However, progression between points is not always clear: the opening comments about newspapers as a source of information and taking information at home do not lead smoothly into the stated position. Connections are also repetitive, especially the repeated use of “easy” and “information,” and phrases such as “If i talk about more difference” do not clearly signal the comparison that follows. Organise each body paragraph around one distinct reason, use clearer links between claims and examples, and make references such as “this kind of papers” more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use a basic range of topic vocabulary, including “digital devices,” “printed papers and books,” “online system,” and “recordings and videos,” which allows the reader to understand the general argument. However, vocabulary is often repetitive or imprecise: “take information” appears several times, and “the things are converting on digital devices” does not express the intended change naturally. There are also noticeable spelling errors, such as “infomation,” “totaly,” and “awail,” and some word combinations are awkward, including “number of minutes.” These choices sometimes make the meaning less clear. Build a wider set of accurate expressions for access, cost, reading habits and publication formats, and check spelling and collocations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a contrast between past and present habits and a conditional example beginning “If i talk about more difference.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and frequent errors can make the reader pause. Examples include “The people now able to read” (missing a verb), “the habits … is also changing” (agreement), and “the people took information” where the tense does not fit the intended general comparison. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also inconsistent, as in “society. It” and the long sentence beginning “The online system is very beneficial.” Practise forming complete clauses, maintaining consistent tense, and using commas and full stops to separate ideas. More accurate control of these basics would make your argument easier to follow.
