IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

As the technology advances, people will rely more on it for every minor problem. It is only a matter of time that most of our daily life activities won't be possible without indulging technology in it and nobody will open a book or search for a specific problem just to reach its solution.

Yes, people might switch from tradional ways like buying tons of books or news papers to attain knowledge to mobile phones which would cost alot less. Technology will make everything 10x easier and approachable. You can literally land any information reagrarding any topic with just one click. Time management would be the biggest advantage we get through this advancement. Nobody has to spend hours on going through extensive topics just to get a tiny concept out of it. Resources will also be unlimited contrary to what a single book or newpaper will provide.

Although, I strongly agree that technology will replace the traditional ways of knowledge, some people would still prefer reading books as hobbies and to get away from the chaos of the world. Screens will be a big part of our lives and they require alot of continuous attention, hence relying on it for educational purposes as well as for every other issue will 100% eventually lead to health problems.

The switch from newspaper and books to mobile phones and computers has aready been started and opinions on its likings and unlinkings is very controversial so we do not have a clear picture of whether people will switch totally or not.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You take a generally clear position, especially in “I strongly agree that technology will replace the traditional ways,” and you give relevant reasons: online access is cheaper and faster, while prolonged screen use may discourage some readers. However, the response only partly addresses the precise claim that people will read everything online without paying. It does not examine whether free access is realistic or distinguish newspapers from books, and the final paragraph says the outcome remains unclear, weakening your position. Several points, such as “10x easier” and the health concern, are asserted rather than explained with examples or fuller reasoning. Develop both sides of your view and make your conclusion consistent with your stated degree of agreement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting online reading, a qualification about people who still enjoy books, and a concluding paragraph. Linking expressions such as “Although” and “hence” help show relationships between ideas. However, progression is uneven: the opening makes a broad prediction, while the final paragraph introduces uncertainty rather than clearly resolving the argument. The second paragraph also moves quickly from cost to convenience, time management and unlimited resources, with little development connecting these points. Some links are awkward or unclear, particularly “Although” at the start of a sentence followed by a comma, and “opinions on its likings and unlinkings.” Organise the reasons into a clearer sequence and use the conclusion to restate your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “traditional ways,” “extensive topics,” “resources,” and “health problems,” and the reader can generally understand your ideas. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or informal expressions limit clarity and control: “tradional,” “reagrarding,” “alot,” and “newpaper” are noticeable, while “10x easier” is too informal for an academic essay. Some combinations are unnatural, such as “indulging technology in it,” “land any information,” and “opinions on its likings and unlinkings.” Choose more precise academic collocations and check spelling carefully. For example, describe accessing information online rather than “landing” it, and refer to differing views rather than “likings and unlinkings.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including the contrast introduced by “Although” and the cause-and-effect clause beginning “hence relying on it.” These attempts show some range, but errors recur and occasionally make relationships difficult to follow. In the opening, “It is only a matter of time that” needs a different construction, such as “before.” The phrase “nobody has to spend hours on going through” has an awkward grammatical pattern, and “The switch … has aready been started” contains an incorrect verb form. There are also problems with sentence boundaries and punctuation, including the comma after “Although” and the long final sentence. Practise accurate clause construction, verb forms and punctuation while keeping your complex sentences manageable.
