IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In modern days, the widespread availability of online documents has sparked the debate over the continued relevance of printed newspaper and books. Although the printed documents possess the security of enclosed data over the online documents, I firmly agree that modern generations will prefer online materials beacuse of its convenience and cheap availability.

In the one hand, reading from printed documents, such as books and newspaper, provides the satisfaction to the reader. People can buy products from local stationery, and have a personal time with books , after the long stressful working days. For instance, fictional books can provide curosity and entertainment to the readers and newspaper share recent happennigs of a country and the world. People pay for their materials, and the printing company is also paying their employess and the money is circulating within the local regional market, which promotes the writers to create more books and share facts to the people.

In the other hand, getting data from the internet is very convenient for the readers. The several varieties of materials such as news, fiction stories, books, novels are uploaded in the online markets. With small sum of money, people can rent the digital books to read, for instance, using Google Books. Although the printed format of data or information is shared with limited number of people who are willing to pay high amount of upfront money to own the copies, reader can get the same copies of books with fraction of costs. Regarding news, its readily avaiable in several apps or softwares or listening sites costing little or no amount.

In conclusion, while the printed format promotes the regional economy, I content to the belief that in coming days, online reading will be more preferred by the readers. The purpose is to convey information, entertainment, news to the public, future readers will choose online materials over printed format because they are economical and convenient to use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you agree that online reading will become more popular because it is convenient and economical, and you acknowledge the counterpoint that print supports local businesses and offers a satisfying reading experience. The examples of renting digital books through Google Books and accessing news through apps help address the topic. This meets the task well, but the two sides are not developed equally: the economic benefit of print is explained, while the claim that online access is free or will replace printed books and newspapers is not examined in enough detail. To strengthen the response, address the prompt’s prediction more directly and explain whether free online access is realistic, including any limits such as paid subscriptions or copyright.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for printed and online materials, and a conclusion that restates your view. The contrast between the two formats gives the essay a logical progression, and examples are generally placed alongside the relevant points. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “In the one hand” and “In the other hand” do not form accurate linking phrases, and the long sentence beginning “People pay for their materials” combines several related ideas without clearly showing their relationship. Use more natural transitions and divide complex points into manageable sentences. Clearer referencing would also help readers follow phrases such as “the same copies” and “its” in the discussion of online news.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “widespread availability,” “printed format,” “upfront money,” and “regional economy.” These choices help communicate the contrast between print and digital reading, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccurate or unnatural expressions. For instance, “security of enclosed data” does not clearly express the intended advantage of printed material, while “small sum of money” and “recent happenings” are less natural in context. There are also spelling errors such as “beacuse,” “curosity,” and “avaiable.” Aim for more precise collocations and proofread spelling; this would make your ideas sound more fluent and controlled without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a concession with “Although” and a relative clause in “fictional books can provide curiosity and entertainment to the readers.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. Examples include “printed newspaper and books,” where the plural form is needed, “reader can get,” where the article or plural should be adjusted, and “I content to the belief,” which has an incorrect verb pattern. The sentence beginning “Although the printed format…” also shifts from “format” to “reader” without a clear grammatical match. Review articles, subject–verb agreement, plural forms, and verb patterns, and check that long sentences maintain consistent subjects.
