IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There is an ongoing debate whether in future people will have access to news and books virtually without paying single penny rather than buying physical edition. However, online access will make everything convenient, I disagree to some extent because there will be a modest amount of people who wants to buy paper edition.
On the one hand, due to advancement of technology, it had made convenient for people to read anything from anywhere without commuting or searching for a particular book. This may be often cheaper option rather than paying for printed material. For example, students can read online articles and study resources from home without going to institution. In addition, E-books do not take any physical space, as it is stored digitally and in an organized way which makes it easier for anyone to search without wasting plenty of time if necessary.
Despite these benefits, I think there will be a significant number of people who will chose to buy such materials. This is because screen reading for a long time can cause eye strain and distraction which will make it difficult for readers to read and prefer physical books. Futhermore, the online content is not totally free, people still have to purchase subscribtion in order to obtain information

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is identifiable: you partly disagree because some readers will continue to buy printed materials. You also give relevant reasons on both sides, including convenience and storage benefits online, and eye strain and paid subscriptions as reasons print may remain. However, the response does not fully develop the task: the claim that people can read everything online without paying is only briefly challenged, and the example about students accessing resources does not explain whether those resources are free. The final point about subscriptions is relevant but needs explanation or an example. The response is also 40 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to develop and support your ideas. Extend each main reason and clarify your overall position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph presenting online advantages, and a paragraph explaining why print may continue. The contrast marker “On the one hand” followed by “Despite these benefits” helps the reader follow the shift in argument, and ideas within each paragraph are generally connected. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the stronger progression expected at the next level. However, the response ends abruptly after the subscription point, without a conclusion that restates your position. Some links between claims could also be clearer—for example, explain how the example about students supports the claim that online reading is free. Add a concluding paragraph and use transitions to show the relationship between each reason and your position.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “advancement of technology,” “physical space,” “eye strain,” and “distraction.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “physical edition,” “modest amount of people,” and “purchase subscribtion.” There are also spelling errors, including “Futhermore” and “chose” where the intended meaning is “choose.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim to use standard collocations for print and digital media, and proofread spelling and word forms. Repeating “people” and “read” less often would also help make the vocabulary more flexible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “as,” and “which.” Most of the meaning remains clear, and the sentence about e-books and physical space shows an attempt to explain a consequence in a longer structure. Some grammatical errors remain, however. For example, “There is an ongoing debate whether” needs a linking phrase such as “about whether,” while “it had made convenient” has an unclear subject and verb construction. In “a modest amount of people who wants,” the noun phrase and verb do not agree, and “people still have to purchase subscription” needs an article or plural form. Review agreement, articles, and verb forms, then check that each sentence has a clear subject and complete structure.
